Chapter 30 – Liam

Overview

Liam is trapped in a disturbing dream that begins with desire for Dianna and twists into a vision of Dianna’s death, his own grief, and Oblivion’s hunger for destruction. The dream forces Liam to confront his former contempt for Ig’Morruthens and reveals a terrifying possible future in which Onuna is destroyed under Kaden’s shadow. The chapter deepens Liam’s conflicted feelings for Dianna while warning that his choices, history, and power may be connected to a coming catastrophe.

Summary

Liam dreams of a past morning with an unnamed lover in his chamber. When the woman worries about Imogen, Liam coldly says he is not betrothed, does not love Imogen, cannot love the woman, and will not give anyone a crown for sharing his bed.

The dream shifts when the lover becomes Dianna. Liam is disturbed by wanting her, but the dream intensifies until desire turns into horror: blood appears beneath Liam’s hand, Dianna accuses him of breaking a promise, and Dianna dies in Liam’s arms, turning to ash. Liam’s grief and rage awaken Oblivion’s response, suggesting Liam’s destructive power is eager to answer his pain.

Liam then finds himself in silver armor inside the Chamber of Raeul in Rashearim, watching an old memory of himself with The Hand. Logan, Cameron, Xavier, Vincent, and the others laugh after battle, while Liam’s past self calls Ig’Morruthens mindless weapons that should be wiped from the realms. Dianna appears beside Liam and comments on the cruelty of Liam’s old beliefs; Liam admits he was arrogant and once thought killing was the only way to protect his home.

When Liam asks whether Dianna’s presence is part of the blooddreams, the dream-Dianna taunts Liam about his attraction to her and whether he could want a “monster.” Liam insists Dianna is not a monster. Dianna then changes, her eyes turning crimson, and tells Liam that the vision is showing him how the world ends.

The scene shifts to a balcony on Onuna, where Liam sees his own soldiers and a devastated landscape of ash, rubble, crimson lightning, and a massive Ig’Morruthen burning the sky. Dianna appears with white eyes and a brutal neck wound, blaming Liam for bringing destruction. Beyond Dianna, Liam sees Kaden enthroned in obsidian armor with a monstrous beast behind him.

Hundreds of mutilated dead emerge and point toward the ruined world. As Liam denies responsibility and begs to know how to stop the catastrophe, the dead advance and chant, “This is how the world ends,” trapping Liam in a vision of destruction tied to his past, Dianna, Kaden, and Onuna’s possible ruin.
