Chapter 50 – Dianna
Overview
Dianna and Liam search Kaden’s abandoned island and discover that Gabriella is not there, pushing Dianna into grief, rage, and traumatic memories of Kaden’s control. Liam helps Dianna reason that Kaden likely kept Gabriella alive as leverage, but the search expands into a broader crisis when Drake, Ethan, and other contacts are also missing. Back in Silver City, Dianna’s desperation peaks just as a mysterious static-filled television turns on and her name is spoken.
Summary
Dianna and Liam arrive at Kaden’s island of Novas, which Dianna has already set on fire in her panic over Gabriella’s disappearance. Dianna wants Liam to call Oblivion against anyone responsible, but Liam refuses because Dianna and possibly Gabriella are there and he will not risk harming them. As they enter the empty fortress, Dianna realizes the island has been abandoned.
Dianna searches Alistair’s and Tobias’s rooms and finds nothing, then forces herself to enter Kaden’s room, a place tied to her abuse and past captivity. The room is untouched, including the framed beach photo of Dianna and Gabriella that Kaden had grudgingly allowed Dianna to keep. Overwhelmed by fear, grief, and rage, Dianna smashes the photo, destroys the dresser, mirror, and bed, and attacks the room as a symbol of the prison Kaden made for her.
Liam stops Dianna before the destruction can continue. Dianna insists Gabriella must be dead because Kaden and his people have clearly been gone for some time, but Liam argues that Kaden would not kill Gabriella because Gabriella is Kaden’s last way to control Dianna. Liam asks Dianna to trust him and explains that Kaden’s goal is to make Dianna reckless, which is already happening.
Dianna steadies enough to follow Liam, but the broken photo triggers a memory of a beach trip where Gabriella depended on Dianna to jump first and prove the cliffs were safe. Dianna admits to Liam that she is scared, exposing how deeply Gabriella’s disappearance has shaken her.
Later, in Gabriella’s room in Silver City, Dianna holds Gabriella’s sweater and reflects that Gabriella was her home and refuge whenever Kaden hurt her. Liam reports that Drake, Ethan, and many of Dianna’s old contacts are also missing, and that the map from Ethan led only to empty caverns and mines. Dianna wants to keep searching, but Liam presses her to think of another place Kaden might have hidden.
Dianna breaks down under Liam’s questions, insisting she does not know where else to look. As her emotions surge, the room shakes, though Dianna assumes Liam caused it. When Dianna tries to calm herself, static fills the room, the television turns on behind them, and Dianna’s name is spoken.
