Chapter 38 – Liam

Overview

Liam learns that Camilla’s betrayal was partly a ruse: her kiss gave him visions pointing toward Azrael’s daughter, the Book of Azrael, and their next destination. Dianna survives Santiago’s shooting by unleashing terrifying power, but the escape from Camilla’s villa fractures and then intensifies her bond with Liam.

After Liam and Dianna hide in the jungle, their fight over Camilla exposes Dianna’s jealousy and Liam’s growing devotion. The moment nearly becomes a kiss, but an Irvikuva ambushes Dianna, ending the chapter with her dragged away wounded.

Summary

After Santiago shoots Dianna, Liam nearly loses control, but Camilla’s earlier kiss has already shown him visions of Azrael’s daughter, the book she carries, and the town where she stayed. Liam realizes Camilla has been secretly working against Kaden and warned him to play along to keep Dianna safer, though Liam fears the deception has damaged Dianna’s trust.

Santiago sadistically shoots Dianna’s fallen body again, then prepares to leave. Before Liam can break free, darkness and immense power fill the room. Dianna transforms into a massive black beast and attacks Camilla, dropping the binding on Liam. Santiago escapes by magic, while his coven remains to capture Dianna.

Liam stops Dianna from killing Camilla because Camilla is still needed, then shields Camilla as witches and Irvikuva swarm the collapsing villa. Liam fights through bullets and monsters, gets Camilla outside, heals her wounds, and honors their deal by telling Camilla to flee the island with her closest people. Camilla tells Liam that Dianna cares about him and that he must remember that to survive Kaden’s plans, then disappears.

Liam reenters the burning mansion to find Dianna. On the top floor, Liam kills several Irvikuva and discovers Dianna slaughtering more of them in a ruined study. With the structure failing and more creatures closing in, Liam grabs Dianna and launches them through the roof into the jungle, then summons fog and storm cover to hide them from the pursuing beasts.

In the jungle, Dianna erupts at Liam for touching her, restraining her, and seemingly choosing Camilla over her while Dianna was shot. Liam explains that Camilla’s kiss transmitted vital information and that Camilla has been undercover, but Dianna remains hurt and furious. Their argument shifts into jealousy, and both edge toward admitting desire; Liam realizes Dianna has become more important to him than power or the looming war.

Just as Liam moves to kiss Dianna, an Irvikuva ambushes them from behind. Its talons pierce Dianna’s midsection, and before Liam can react, the creature yanks Dianna into the brush and out of sight.
