Chapter 12 – Dianna

Overview

Dianna wakes as Liam's prisoner and discovers that Liam's people can contain, weaken, and interrogate Dianna despite Dianna's fire, shapeshifting, and defiance. The chapter reveals that Dianna did not kill Zekiel, but allowed that belief to protect Dianna's position with Kaden's forces.

Liam's interrogation exposes how much Liam already knows about Dianna's circle, especially Gabby, making Gabby Dianna's clearest vulnerability. Dianna refuses to betray anyone, escalating the conflict into a battle of endurance and threats rather than information.

Summary

Dianna wakes in a stark white holding cell, injured, dressed in borrowed clothes, and remembering how Samkiel—now called Liam—overpowered her at the embassy. Dianna studies the cell and realizes it is not mortal-made. Dianna tries to burn through it, but her fire only melts the bars and reveals blue energy beams that still block escape.

After two days of failed escape attempts, including being electrocuted when trying to pass the beams, Dianna considers enduring the pain long enough to break free. The thought triggers Dianna's memory of Zekiel using a dagger and a summoning phrase to bring Samkiel back, proving Dianna did not kill Zekiel though she let others believe she had. The memory haunts Dianna because Zekiel's hopelessness reminds Dianna of Gabby and herself.

Liam appears with Logan and Vincent through teleportation. Dianna attacks, but Liam easily extinguishes Dianna's fire, demonstrating that Liam is now prepared for Dianna's abilities. Dianna tries to provoke Liam by shifting forms and accusing Liam of fearing himself, which visibly unsettles Liam before Vincent blasts Dianna across the room in defense of Liam.

Neverra arrives with more celestials and announces that preparations are ready. A glowing circle like Zekiel's immobilizes Dianna, allowing Logan and Vincent to cuff Dianna with the Chains of Abareath. The chains weaken Dianna so severely that Dianna can no longer feel Dianna's fire, terrifying Dianna as the celestials drag Dianna from the cell to an interrogation chamber.

In the chamber, Dianna is locked into a runed chair before Liam, his allies, celestials, and mortal observers. Liam explains that the chair detects lies, refusals, and escape attempts by burning Dianna. Liam questions Dianna about the embassy attack, how many Ig'Morruthens there are, who Dianna works for, and what relic Dianna seeks, but Dianna lies, mocks Liam, and refuses to cooperate despite repeated shocks.

Liam reveals photos of Dianna with Gabby, Tobias, and Alistair, proving Liam's people have been watching Dianna and her companions. Dianna realizes Gabby is exposed and refuses to give any information, choosing torture over endangering Gabby. When Liam threatens to question Gabby, Dianna threatens to kill Liam; Liam's power rises, but Liam restrains himself and continues the interrogation for hours until the repeated burning finally makes Dianna lose consciousness.
