Chapter 4 – Dianna
Overview
Dianna finally spends time with Gabby in Valoel and sees how full Gabby’s life has become with Rick, deepening Dianna’s guilt over the months Kaden’s mission has stolen. Their conversations expose the moral danger of Kaden’s hunt for the Book of Azrael, especially because Gabby fears his “normalcy” would hurt others.
The chapter shifts from domestic calm to ominous warning as a quake damages ancient temples near Ecanus and Dianna encounters two unsettling clubgoers with strange silver rings. These signs suggest Kaden’s search may be approaching something real, while Dianna’s protective instincts pull her away from Gabby’s fragile happiness.
Summary
Dianna teleports into Gabby’s Valoel apartment expecting an enthusiastic reunion, but finds Gabby in bed with Rick Evergreen instead. After teasing them, Dianna notices Gabby’s redesigned home, academic plaques, and happy domestic life, which makes Dianna proud but also painfully aware of how much time Kaden’s demands have kept Dianna away.
Over breakfast, Gabby reveals Rick has been staying with her and that their relationship has become serious. Gabby admits she hates Kaden because Dianna is bound to obey him for Gabby’s sake, but Dianna insists Dianna does not regret trading her life to save Gabby. When Gabby asks what Dianna has been doing, Dianna explains Kaden believes he is close to finding the Book of Azrael and that Alistair may have found a way into Arariel near The Hand.
Gabby grows alarmed when Dianna says Kaden believes the book can open realms and create “normalcy” for their kind. Their conversation reveals Gabby is unlike Dianna and the other monsters Kaden made: Gabby does not feed on blood or change shape, and her only apparent power is a calming, healing empathy. Dianna tries to reassure Gabby that the book cannot still exist, but Gabby worries about what Kaden’s goal would mean for everyone else.
The sisters spend several days together in rare peace, going to the beach, drinking, singing karaoke, eating ice cream, shopping, and talking. During one quiet night, a news report announces a strange quake near Ecanus that damaged three ancient temples, and Dianna panics because the event feels connected to Kaden’s search. Dianna checks her phone repeatedly, fearing she has missed Kaden’s summons, but no message comes.
While driving and dining with Gabby, Dianna argues that celestials changed and damaged Onuna, while Gabby insists not all celestials are evil and mentions working near some. At dinner, their fortunes hint at looming change: Dianna’s says a big change is coming, and Gabby’s says a single act can change the world. Dianna dismisses the fortunes, but the warnings echo the chapter’s growing unease.
Later, Dianna and Gabby go clubbing, where Dianna briefly recalls destroying Drake’s club and killing him. Dianna notices an unnaturally beautiful woman wearing glowing silver rings, then later meets a handsome man at the bar with similar rings and an unsettling presence that does not read as celestial or Otherworldly. Though he appears mortal, Dianna’s instincts warn her something is wrong, so Dianna leaves Gabby with Rick, checks again for messages from Kaden, and teleports away still uneasy.
