Chapter 20 – Dianna
Overview
Dianna reunites with Gabby after the attack, forcing an emotional reconciliation while deepening Dianna’s conflict with Liam over trust, control, and the terms of their blood bargain. Gabby’s safety becomes the condition that pushes Dianna to cooperate, but Gabby warns that Dianna may have replaced Kaden with another powerful master.
Dianna begins contributing valuable intelligence by identifying the shades and suggesting that Kaden’s enemies may become allies. The chapter shifts the story from rescue and confinement into an uneasy strategic partnership, with Dianna preparing to leave Gabby behind again to hunt for the Book of Azrael or a way to kill Kaden.
Summary
Dianna bursts into the damaged building furious at Liam for leaving her behind, but relief overtakes her anger when Gabby emerges alive. Gabby apologizes for their earlier fight, admits fear drove her words, and embraces Dianna. Dianna tells Gabby they will talk later, then turns on Liam, revealing she escaped confinement by breaking her wrists to get out of the cuffs.
Dianna and Liam argue over trust, orders, and the blood deal that makes Dianna his in exchange for Gabby’s protection. Dianna insists Liam needs her knowledge of Kaden’s world and cannot keep acting alone. During the tense elevator ride, Gabby apologizes to Liam for stabbing him, Liam reveals some of Dianna’s crimes, and Dianna lashes out about Rashearim until Gabby intervenes. Dianna finally states her terms: if Liam can help give Gabby a normal life, Dianna will cooperate, but only if Liam listens to her and stops simply ordering her around. Liam accepts.
After the attack, Liam confronts Vincent for failing to keep Dianna at the Guild, and Vincent explains Dianna brought them there with a thought. Gabby observes that Dianna may have traded one powerful man for another. Later, Gabby is moved into a luxurious apartment in the Silver City of Boel, where Neverra shows her around. Alone with Gabby, Dianna admits the arrangement is temporary until she finds the Book of Azrael or kills Kaden.
Dianna confesses to Gabby that she killed Alistair after seeing Logan’s dying thoughts and realizing Logan loved Neverra without malice. Dianna breaks down, admitting she has been unhappy with Kaden and has been pretending for a long time. Gabby comforts Dianna, reminds her she now has choices, and urges her to make things right where she can. Their moment softens into sisterly teasing before Vincent arrives to say Liam wants Dianna’s presence.
Dianna appears before Liam furious at being summoned, but Liam apologizes for the wording and gathers Dianna, Vincent, and Neverra for a strategy meeting. Liam reports deaths among celestials controlled by Alistair, Logan’s expected recovery, and the lack of useful leads. When Liam shows drawings of the attackers from Gabby’s rescue, Dianna identifies them as shades from Hillmun’s clan and says that clan will no longer be a problem. Dianna explains that Kaden has made enemies who may help, and she believes Kaden will hide Alistair’s death to protect his pride. Liam gives Dianna one hour to pack and say goodbye to Gabby before they leave, while Vincent and Neverra’s readiness to kill her reinforces Dianna’s fear that she has exchanged one master for another.
