Chapter 18 – Liam
Overview
Liam interrogates Dianna and learns that Kaden's threat is larger than expected: Kaden has spies inside the Guild, surviving generals, an army of Irvikuva, and a goal tied to the supposedly mythical Book of Azrael. Dianna's answers expose her history, her bond to Gabby, and the depth of Kaden's control, while also stirring Liam's buried memories of Azrael and the fall of his world.
Despite their blood pact, Liam refuses to trust Dianna and imprisons her before going to retrieve Gabby himself. This decision protects the celestials from Dianna but risks escalating the fragile alliance because Gabby's safety is Dianna's only true priority.
Summary
Liam questions Dianna in the lower level of the Guild while repairs continue above after Dianna's violent arrival. Vincent refuses to leave Liam until Liam orders Vincent and the other celestials to verify Dianna's claim that Alistair had spies inside the Guild: Enrique, Melissa, Richard, and Peter.
Once alone, Liam presses Dianna on why she betrayed Kaden. Dianna admits that she serves Kaden because of Gabby and because Kaden controls her life, then describes Kaden's powers, his status as the creatures' claimed King of the Otherworld, and his ability to command others. Liam notes Dianna's fierce reaction whenever Gabby is mentioned and recognizes that Dianna is more afraid and desperate than she admits.
Dianna reveals that Kaden made her from his own power after Dianna sacrificed herself to save Gabby, that Dianna came from Eoria, and that Eoria was destroyed in the fall of Liam's world. Dianna explains that Kaden has failed to make another like her; others who take his blood become winged, emotionless Irvikuva, and Kaden has an army of them. Dianna also names herself, Tobias, and Alistair as Kaden's generals, meaning Kaden has now lost two.
When Liam asks what Kaden is searching for, Dianna says Kaden wants the Book of Azrael. The name triggers Liam's memory of Azrael during the fall of Rashearim: Azrael refused to join the battlefield because Victoria was pregnant, and Liam, instead of executing Azrael for treason, gave him threads from his own back and allowed him to flee for his child's sake. Returning to the present, Liam insists there is no Book of Azrael and that Azrael is dead, but Dianna points out that Liam was also thought to be a legend.
Because Dianna has killed Alistair and betrayed Kaden, Liam concludes that Gabby is in immediate danger and asks for Gabby's location. Dianna expects to go with Liam, but Liam refuses because he does not trust Dianna. When Dianna resists, breaks a guard's nose, and refuses the cuffs, Liam carries Dianna to a rune-barred cell himself.
Dianna begs to accompany Liam, warning that Gabby will be terrified if Liam arrives without her, but Liam leaves Dianna imprisoned under Vincent's watch. Liam receives images and an address for a beach resort where Gabby is believed to be staying, orders the celestials to remain with Vincent, and departs alone to retrieve Gabby.
