Chapter 42 – Dianna
Overview
Dianna and Liam’s relationship becomes openly intimate and emotionally possessive, but the chapter quickly turns their fragile peace into new danger. Dianna is forced to confront guilt when their hosts are revealed as the parents of Peter, a celestial victim tied to her past violence.
At the jungle temple, Ava confirms that Victoria is dead and reveals the Book’s true stakes: it contains secrets capable of killing Liam and enabling Kaden’s world-ending plans. Dianna’s protective attachment to Liam hardens into a vow as the group descends into Victoria’s hidden catacombs in search of the Book.
Summary
Dianna wakes beside Liam and their romantic intimacy continues, deepening the new bond between them. The moment is interrupted when a phone rings repeatedly; Liam answers and learns from Logan that they have missed their convoy, leaving Dianna unapologetic about the delay.
At breakfast, Coretta and her husband host Dianna kindly while reading news of the previous night’s chaos. Coretta mentions the claw wounds Dianna suffered and then thanks Liam for the gifts and messages sent after the death of their son, Peter, who died in the attack on Arariel. Dianna realizes Peter was one of the celestials she harmed and feels sick with guilt as Peter’s grieving mother unknowingly makes Dianna tea for her pain, while Liam quietly steadies Dianna with a comforting touch.
After taking a later convoy, Dianna scouts the temple area in bird form before meeting Liam near the ruins where they expect to meet Azrael’s daughter. Dianna questions why Peter’s parents were not told the full truth, and Liam explains that Vincent chose mercy over a harsher truth. Liam also opens up about worsening prophetic nightmares inherited through his bloodline, though Liam refuses to describe the worst parts.
Ava arrives with her celestial guard, Geraldo. Ava reveals that her mother, Victoria, died long ago and shows Liam a shimmering blanket Azrael had given for Ava. Geraldo and Ava recognize Dianna as Ig’Morruthen and know some information from Camilla, forcing Dianna and Liam to abandon their attempted cover; Dianna’s possessive protectiveness over Liam also becomes obvious, especially after Dianna awkwardly calls Liam her “friend.”
As the group enters the restricted temple ruins, Dianna’s mistrust escalates. Dianna challenges Ava and Geraldo about their secrecy, and Ava explains that Victoria kept them hidden to protect the Book. Ava reveals that Azrael’s book contains Rashearim secrets, including ways to open realms, end worlds, and kill Liam; Dianna is shaken by the idea that Liam can die and vows that she will not let anyone harm him.
Deeper in the catacombs, Ava explains that Victoria helped build and protect a maze of tunnels beneath the jungle temples. When the map seems to lead into a solid wall, Dianna discovers a false door, and Liam opens it with celestial magic. The passage reveals eerie carvings, armor from Liam’s dreams, and a chilling atmosphere Dianna associates with past attacks, before the group reaches a cliff above deep water and prepares to continue downward.
