Chapter 3 – Dianna
Overview
Dianna carries out Kaden’s order to punish the Vanderkai vampires by killing Drake, a close friend who has refused to support Kaden’s plan to reopen the realms. Drake’s warnings suggest Kaden’s search for the Book of Azrael could unleash a greater war, but Dianna chooses obedience to protect her sister and preserve her place at Kaden’s side.
The chapter deepens Dianna’s inner conflict by showing that her loyalty is coerced rather than wholehearted. Kaden’s surveillance and reward afterward confirm that even Dianna’s most painful acts are tests of control.
Summary
Dianna flies over Novas in wyvern form, briefly savoring the freedom her Ig’Morruthen shapeshifting gives her. The moment ends when she remembers Kaden’s order from the previous night: bring him Drake Vanderkai’s head and make the killing messy enough to send a message.
Dianna understands that Kaden’s command is another test of her loyalty after her hesitation at his meeting. Drake is one of Dianna’s few trusted friends and also Gabby’s friend, but Dianna believes she cannot refuse without endangering her position and, by extension, Gabby’s safety.
Dianna reaches Tirin, a city in Zarall ruled by Vampire King Ethan Vanderkai, and heads to a club owned by Ethan’s brother Drake. She pushes past the mortal crowd, kills the vampire bouncers at the entrance, and storms inside. When vampires attack, Dianna slaughters her way through the club until she reaches the upstairs lounge.
Drake waits calmly in the lounge. Dianna demands to know why Drake and Ethan stopped attending Kaden’s meetings, and Drake says Ethan will not follow Kaden because Kaden is a tyrant whose beliefs are clouded. Dianna warns him that defiance has consequences, while Drake suggests Kaden’s search for the Book of Azrael may trigger another massive war and hints that an old threat may return.
Dianna rejects Drake’s warnings as legends and insists the old gods died in the Gods War. The two fight, but Drake eventually asks Dianna to stop and join him, promising protection and reminding her they are best friends. Dianna admits she does not want to kill him, then drives her hand into his chest, burns him from within, and kills him anyway.
After Drake dies, Dianna stands stunned in the wreckage with the remains of his heart. Kaden calls and tells Dianna she may go see her sister now. Dianna notices a camera, realizes Kaden watched the whole execution, acknowledges him, and disappears from the ruined club.
