Chapter 31 – Dianna

Overview

Dianna and Liam reach Zarall, but Liam’s nightmare leaves him withdrawn until their arrival at Drake’s hidden vampire castle forces his protectiveness and jealousy into the open. Drake’s concern about Dianna’s blood deal with Liam reframes the alliance as emotionally risky, not merely strategic.

The chapter deepens Liam and Dianna’s bond through conflict: Liam admits the burden of kingship, reacts violently to Drake’s intimacy with Dianna, then apologizes and shows tenderness by transforming Dianna’s dress. Their next step is dinner with Ethan and Drake, where they hope to gain information about the book.

Summary

Dianna wakes Liam from another nightmare after a restless night in the backseat of the car. Liam opens his eyes with unnatural silver brightness and whispers about how the world ends, then recognizes Dianna and pulls away. His sudden coldness continues through dawn, making Dianna wonder whether her fear of Kaden or her growing openness has made Liam decide she is not worth helping.

After a tense flight to Zarall, the pilot drops Dianna and Liam at an abandoned airport and reminds Dianna of their payment agreement. Dianna warns Liam not to attack her friends, then teleports them away, but her memory of Drake’s directions is imperfect and they end up hiking through jungle. As they walk, Dianna explains Drake’s place among the vampires and how Kaden helped Ethan rise to power; Liam responds by admitting that kingship is a burden he would surrender if he could, then asks Dianna not to repeat that confession.

Drake suddenly finds Dianna and greets her with exuberant affection, but Liam mistakes the tackle for an attack and nearly kills Drake. Dianna physically intervenes, calming Liam enough for Liam to release Drake. The hidden vampire estate is then revealed: a guarded castle where Drake orders his men and dogs to stand down, teases Liam, and leads both guests inside because Ethan is waiting for dinner and discussion.

In her lavish room, Dianna bathes, recovers a sense of comfort, and remembers that the visit is part of a larger mission: gathering information, finding the book, and possibly facing imprisonment afterward. Drake visits and questions Dianna about Liam, noticing their entwined scents and growing intimacy. When Dianna admits she and Liam made a blood deal, Drake becomes alarmed and warns that Dianna may be trading Kaden’s control for another powerful man’s influence; Dianna insists she is trying to free Gabby, help her friends, and end tyrants.

Liam appears when Dianna becomes distressed, driving Drake out with possessive hostility. Dianna challenges Liam’s jealousy, but Liam says Drake touches her too freely and admits the crowded castle overwhelms him. After Dianna dresses, Liam criticizes the outfit and magically transforms it into a shimmering crimson gown, telling Dianna she looks like a queen and should wear the finest fabrics.

The moment softens Liam and Dianna’s tension. Liam admits he was unkind because the nightmare disturbed him, apologizes sincerely, and confirms they are friends. Dianna reassures Liam that dinner should be brief and may provide leads to the book, and Liam revives their pinkie promise ritual by asking her to promise they can leave afterward.
