CHAPTER 71
Overview
Vincent Blake escalates the conflict by sending Avery a puzzle-like photograph proving that he has abducted Alisa Ortega. The kidnapping cuts Avery off from a crucial legal and political ally, showing that Blake is systematically removing her protections.
Avery realizes the authorities may be compromised or unavailable, leaving her trapped in Blake’s game. To save Alisa, Avery concludes that Blake wants them to locate the long-hidden remains connected to Toby and Blake’s son.
Summary
A package arrives at Hawthorne House, and Avery, Oren, Libby, and the Hawthorne brothers understand it is from Vincent Blake. After Oren screens it, Avery opens a box containing thirteen envelopes, each holding a transparent plastic sheet marked with abstract black-and-white ink designs.
Jameson suggests stacking the sheets. Avery quickly realizes each sheet can be oriented multiple ways, then uses the printed sides and matching patterns to assemble them correctly. The layers form a single black-and-white photograph showing Alisa Ortega lying unconscious on a dirt floor.
The image reveals Blake’s new leverage: he has taken Alisa, Avery’s lawyer and one of the key people who protects Avery’s fortune and interests. Avery briefly asks whether Alisa could be involved, because Tobias Hawthorne warned her not to trust anyone, but Nash angrily rejects the possibility. Jameson agrees that Blake abducted Alisa just as Blake took Toby.
Grayson vows that they will destroy Blake, but Avery recognizes the trap Tobias anticipated: Blake is targeting the people around Avery because he cannot be attacked directly. Oren had protected Max, Thea, and Rebecca, but Alisa had remained outside that protective lockdown while pursuing her own plans.
Avery repeatedly calls Alisa and gets no answer, which confirms how wrong the situation is. Avery asks whether they can finally call the police, but Oren explains Blake likely has influence in local departments, and the people Tobias once had in place are no longer available to Avery. Without Alisa, Avery lacks the connections needed to counter that influence.
Nash says Alisa would not want them to involve authorities because of the optics, though Avery challenges him on that point. Libby asks what they must do to get Alisa back, and Avery answers that they must find a body—or whatever remains of one after forty years—prompting Nash to demand an explanation.
