CHAPTER 19
Overview
Oren brings Avery proof that Toby was alive as of the previous day, but the lack of a ransom demand deepens the mystery around his abduction. His investigation clears several likely suspects and supports Eve’s story, while revealing that someone may be trying to compromise Avery’s security team.
The chapter shifts the threat from a single kidnapping to a possible coordinated attack on Avery and everyone close to her, raising the stakes for Max and the rest of Avery’s circle.
Summary
After Avery finishes her call with Thea, Oren reports that his team has not traced the courier service. However, the men sent to the location where Toby was supposed to meet Eve followed up on the emergency call connected to the shooting.
Oren explains that the 911 call came from a neighboring warehouse. The warehouse owner does not know who made the call, but he was paid in cash to hand over an envelope to anyone who asked about it. Inside, Avery finds a photograph of Toby, bruised and swollen, holding a newspaper dated the previous day. The picture proves Toby was alive then, but there is no ransom demand.
Trying to regain control, Avery asks about possible suspects, including David Golding’s family, Eve’s half-siblings, Avery’s father Ricky, and Constantine Calligaris. Oren says David Golding’s family is out of the country with clean finances, and the others have been under observation for months with no evidence placing them near Toby’s abduction.
Oren then shares what he found about Eve. Eve’s account checks out: she left her family at eighteen, cut off contact, worked regularly as a waitress, lived in poverty with bad roommates, and met Toby only a few months earlier. Oren also found a troubling high school incident involving Eve and a popular male teacher, which helps explain Eve’s distrust of authority.
Finally, Oren gives Avery a list of thirteen security-team members or close associates who have recently received outside job offers. Because the offers appear coordinated, Oren worries that someone is trying to weaken Avery’s protection. He warns that Toby’s abduction may be part of a broader, multipronged assault on Avery and that anyone close to her, including Max as she prepares to return to college, could be in danger.
