CHAPTER 2
Overview
Avery spends the night balancing longing, distraction, and the pressure of her approaching inheritance while Jameson searches abroad for answers tied to Tobias Hawthorne's puzzles. Jameson finds a triangular mirror hidden in the Tuscan villa, but the discovery deepens the mystery rather than solving it.
The chapter reinforces the importance of the missing disk, Toby's disappearance, and Avery's last connections to Avery's mother. Avery also gains a small victory over Jameson by finding a secret passage entrance that Jameson did not know existed.
Summary
That night, Avery gets into bed at Hawthorne House and waits for Jameson's call. Seeing the bronze key-shaped pin on her nightstand triggers a memory of Jameson, Xander, Nash, and Grayson formally treating her as one of them after she solved the keys faster than any of the Hawthorne brothers.
Avery refuses to let the memory drift toward Grayson and the wine cellar, so Avery distracts herself by anonymously donating money through a crowdfunding site for people facing medical bills and rent. Though Avery does not officially control the Hawthorne fortune for six more weeks, the estate's lawyers have already arranged for Avery to have a credit card with nearly unlimited access.
Jameson calls from Tuscany, where Jameson is using his gap year to travel and investigate properties connected to Tobias Hawthorne. Avery asks about the Tuscan villa, and Jameson describes the seventeenth-century house and its grounds before revealing that Jameson checked the original fireplace and found a triangular mirror.
Avery and Jameson recognize that the mirror is probably a clue, but neither knows what puzzle it belongs to. Their larger search remains focused on the coinlike disk engraved with concentric circles: why it was valuable, why Tobias Hawthorne's son Toby left it for Avery's mother, and why Toby took it back from Avery before disappearing again.
Avery changes the subject and tells Jameson that Avery found another entrance to Hawthorne House's secret passageways in the circular library. Jameson's silence reveals that Jameson did not know about that entrance, giving Avery a rare victory in their ongoing wager. Jameson says Jameson will find it when he returns, then tells Avery that Jameson's next destination is Santorini; Avery tells Jameson to keep searching and keep telling Avery everything.
