CHAPTER 45
Overview
Avery and Jameson’s investigation stalls after they identify the church in the old photograph and realize it is not in France or Margaux. Xander’s mandatory Hawthorne “911” summons interrupts the search, shifting the chapter from clue-solving to family dynamics.
Nash’s rescue of an abused puppy deepens the chapter’s focus on saving and being saved, especially in relation to Libby and Nash. Xander’s cryptic drawings turn out to summon the group to karaoke, briefly replacing the inheritance mystery with a glimpse of Hawthorne brother tradition.
Summary
Avery and Jameson continue working through Tobias Hawthorne’s latest clues until almost dawn. After a brief sleep, they consult Nan and Zara, experiment with the numbers, and identify the church shown in the photograph, discovering that it is not in France and not in Margaux. They return to the unused items from the bag—a steamer, a flashlight, and the USB—but by midmorning they have made no progress.
Xander interrupts the stalled investigation by texting Jameson a “911.” Jameson explains to Avery that, under Hawthorne rules, this is less an emergency than a summons that must be obeyed. Avery and Jameson leave to respond but encounter Nash coming out of Libby’s room with a rescued puppy.
Libby explains that Nash found the puppy in an alley while drunk men were tormenting it. Nash’s rescue of the puppy reinforces Libby’s view of him as someone who saves others, while Nash suggests the puppy may have saved him as well. Avery connects Nash’s behavior to his childhood pain over Skye giving away his brothers and to Libby’s own history of taking Avery in.
Jameson asks Nash whether he received Xander’s message, and Nash confirms that each Hawthorne brother gets one such 911 summons a year. Xander then sends a sequence of drawings: a heart labeled “CARE,” an animal making an “EEEE” sound, an oak tree, and another “EEEE”-shouting animal.
Avery studies the images and solves the rebus: care, eee, oak, eee becomes karaoke. Jameson confirms that Xander has invoked the brothers’ sacred summons for karaoke, pulling Avery and the Hawthornes away from the stalled clue hunt and into another family ritual.
