CHAPTER 49
Overview
The crystal’s final message, DON’T TRUST ANYONE, forces Avery to question whether Tobias Hawthorne intended to warn her about Eve. Avery’s suspicion causes a confrontation that exposes Eve’s secretive search through the files but also supports Eve’s claim that she was only investigating Toby’s captor.
The chapter shifts the conflict from solving a puzzle to managing fractured trust inside Hawthorne House. Eve’s ultimatum—that Avery take her to meet Mallory or Eve will leave—raises the stakes by tying Avery’s next move to Grayson’s loyalty and Eve’s safety.
Summary
Avery, Jameson, and Grayson study the crystal from the Tea Room chandelier. Jameson finds tiny letters spelling “Fin,” concluding that Tobias Hawthorne’s game has ended with the warning projected on the floor: DON’T TRUST ANYONE. Avery resists accepting that this is the final answer and wonders whether the USB drive is separate misdirection or another unresolved piece.
Avery steps back and reconsiders the game’s trigger: Eve’s arrival and meeting with Avery. Because Eve was the event that set the game in motion, Avery suggests that Tobias Hawthorne’s warning may mean not to trust Eve. Grayson rejects this, arguing that the message would have been more specific if Eve were the intended target, while Jameson challenges Avery on whether she wants Eve to be a threat.
Avery reveals that she caught Eve photographing files in the solarium the night before. Before the argument can continue, Oren appears, and Eve enters, having overheard enough to realize Tobias may have known about her. Eve seems genuinely hurt and angry, then offers Avery her phone and passcode so Avery can inspect it.
Avery checks Eve’s photos and finds that Eve photographed Sheffield Grayson’s file because Eve believed he had the wealth and motive to be Toby’s kidnapper. Grayson insists Sheffield is not responsible, while Avery privately knows Sheffield is dead and that his past threat to Toby cannot explain the current situation. Avery finds no incriminating photos beyond Sheffield’s file and Toby’s room, plus months of pictures showing Eve with Toby.
Avery examines Eve’s calls and texts and sees that most are from press attention after the story broke. One message reads, “We have to meet,” and Eve identifies the sender as Mallory Laughlin, her grandmother. Furious at Tobias Hawthorne’s games and hurt by Avery’s suspicion, Eve says she will leave unless Avery takes her to meet Mallory; Grayson urges Avery to stop her, and Avery apologizes, but Eve makes the demand a condition of staying.
