CHAPTER 14
Overview
The group narrows the field of Toby’s possible abductors by largely ruling out the Rooneys and Graysons, then realizes the threat may target Avery rather than Toby. The coded message points them toward someone familiar with Tobias Hawthorne’s games, making Skye Hawthorne the leading suspect.
Plans to confront Skye pull Avery deeper into danger and expose old family wounds, especially for Jameson and Grayson. The chapter ends with Rebecca’s imminent arrival, raising the emotional stakes because Eve’s resemblance to Emily threatens to reopen Rebecca’s grief.
Summary
Back in the library, Avery tells the group that the Rooneys likely do not have Toby. Although the family is ruthless and still dangerous, Avery’s call convinced Avery that they do not know for certain that Toby is alive.
Grayson then rules out the Grayson family, relatives of fire victim Colin Anders Wright. Grayson explains that Sheffield Grayson is supposedly in the Caymans and says he has been monitoring Sheffield’s wife, sister, and daughters, though Avery knows Sheffield is actually dead and that Oren helped cover it up.
With the Rooney and Grayson families unlikely suspects, the group turns to the family of the third fire victim, David Golding, and Oren quietly offers to investigate. Jameson then notes that the envelope was addressed to Avery, raising a new possibility: the revenge threat may be aimed at Avery rather than Toby.
Xander redirects attention from the wording of the message to the code itself. Because the trick resembles Tobias Hawthorne’s old games, the group considers suspects who know how Tobias played. Avery, Jameson, and Grayson land on Skye Hawthorne, whose bitterness toward Avery and familiarity with Hawthorne games make her plausible.
Jameson and Grayson insist they must confront Skye in person, while Nash and Oren object or warn against it. Eve suggests showing Skye the golden disk to see whether she recognizes it, and Grayson reasons that if Skye tries to take it for its value, that would suggest she is not behind Toby’s abduction.
Avery refuses to let the brothers confront Skye without her. Before the plan can proceed, Max arrives with Xander’s phone and says Rebecca is on her way. Xander immediately opts out of the Skye confrontation, and Eve asks who Rebecca is, creating tension because Eve’s resemblance to Emily could devastate Rebecca.
