CHAPTER 11
Overview
Avery’s unease about Eve deepens as Eve proves she can hold her own with the Hawthornes and visibly affects Grayson. Through an honest exchange with Jameson, Avery confronts both Jameson’s lingering guilt over Emily and Avery’s own jealousy of Eve’s connection to Toby and Hawthorne House.
Avery ultimately chooses trust over resentment and tells Eve about the valuable disk Toby took. Eve’s ignorance of the disk sharpens the stakes of Toby’s abduction, suggesting his captors may harm him whether or not they get what they want.
Summary
As Hawthorne Chutes and Ladders continues onto the roof, Avery observes that Eve is competitive, fearless, pain-tolerant, and aware of her effect on Grayson. Eve seems to fit naturally at Hawthorne House, which unsettles Avery because Eve is Toby’s biological daughter and has an immediate connection to the Hawthornes.
Jameson helps Avery onto the roof and notices Avery watching Grayson with Eve. Avery admits that Grayson is not okay and likely has not been okay for a long time. Jameson responds with typical Hawthorne deflection, but Avery recognizes that Jameson is hurting too, especially because Avery’s birthday coincided with the second anniversary of Emily’s death.
Avery invokes “Tahiti,” a code word that requires honesty between Avery and Jameson. Jameson admits he needs reassurance that Emily’s death was not his fault, and Avery tells Jameson plainly that it was not. Jameson then pushes Avery to be honest about Eve, and Avery admits that jealousy is part of Avery’s reaction: Eve is Toby’s daughter, connected to the family and house in a way Avery once hoped to be.
Despite those feelings, Avery decides to tell Eve about the disk because Avery believes they both want to save Toby. After Max and Xander finally reach the roof, Eve asks if she passed the Hawthornes’ test. Avery answers by handing Eve the drawing of the disk and explaining that Toby took it from Avery the last time Avery saw him, that the object was left for Avery’s mother, and that it is worth a fortune.
Eve says Toby never mentioned the disk and does not know where he kept it. The possibility that Toby was abducted for the disk intensifies the danger: Eve fears what Toby’s captors might do if Toby refuses to hand it over, while Avery silently worries what they will do once they have it.
