CHAPTER 57

Overview

Jameson traps Avery in a hidden gemstone room so he and Grayson can pursue Eve without Avery following them into danger. His decision exposes both his fear for Grayson and his desire to protect Avery, even at the cost of betraying her trust.

Jameson’s story about earning his scar after Emily’s death reveals how self-destructive grief runs through the Hawthorne brothers. The chapter shifts the immediate stakes from solving Blake’s game to whether Jameson and Grayson can survive confronting Eve and the larger Hawthorne family reckoning.

Summary

Jameson takes Avery to a third-floor hobby room filled with model trains and activates a hidden mechanism. A wall opens to reveal a small gemstone-lined room made of obsidian and agate crystal, and Jameson directs Avery inside.

Once Avery enters, Jameson stays outside and seals the hidden room, trapping Avery. When Avery calls him, Jameson admits he will release her only after he and Grayson return, revealing that Grayson did not pursue Eve alone because Jameson promised they would go after Eve together.

Avery argues that Eve may be dangerous and could trade Jameson or Grayson to save Toby, especially after Tobias Hawthorne’s warning not to trust anyone. Jameson refuses to be deterred, framing danger as something he has never avoided.

To explain himself, Jameson recounts how he got the long scar on his torso: after Emily died cliff jumping, Jameson returned to the place of her death and jumped repeatedly until a submerged tree branch tore him open. Tobias Hawthorne found Jameson bleeding and responded only by asking whether Jameson had gotten it out of his system.

Jameson tells Avery that Grayson is now the one who will keep pushing until he is hurt because Grayson has lost his emotional grounding. Jameson insists that he must be strong for Grayson and protect Avery, even though Avery demands to come with him.

Jameson acknowledges that he does not trust Eve, but says the only person he fully trusts is Avery. He frames the situation as his family’s mess to clean up, then hangs up, leaving Avery locked in the hidden room while Jameson and Grayson go after Eve.
