CHAPTER 68
Overview
Grayson and Avery finally confront the unresolved feelings, guilt, and expectations that have shaped Grayson’s behavior. Grayson admits both his feelings for Avery and his knowledge that Avery loves Jameson, allowing the relationship between Avery and Grayson to settle into a painful but honest understanding.
Avery refuses to let Grayson isolate himself from the family again and reaffirms that Grayson belongs with them. The chapter then pivots back to the mystery when Avery reveals that she possesses the second USB drive, prompting the next step with the Hawthorne brothers.
Summary
After Oren leaves Avery and Grayson alone in the chapel, Grayson tells Avery that he owes her an apology. Grayson admits that he has spent years punishing himself, not only for Emily’s death but for every perceived weakness and failure, under the relentless pressure of Tobias Hawthorne’s expectations.
Grayson explains that after Tobias died and Avery entered their lives, Grayson struggled with the difference between an idealized version of love and loving someone real. Grayson confesses that his feelings for Avery were never only an idea, and that although Grayson once hated what Avery represented, Grayson never hated Avery herself.
Avery is shaken, but Grayson stops the moment from becoming something else by naming the truth: Jameson loves Avery, and Avery loves Jameson. Avery confirms that she is in love with Jameson and recognizes that Jameson has helped shape the person Avery has become.
Grayson admits that Grayson wanted Eve to be different because Grayson wanted Eve to be Avery. When Grayson prepares to leave, Avery asks Grayson to promise not to shut the Hawthorne family out again, even if Grayson returns to Harvard or goes elsewhere. Avery pins Avery’s Hawthorne pin on Grayson and reminds Grayson that belonging goes both ways.
Grayson answers in Latin that Grayson knows. Avery then looks at the USB drive in Grayson’s hand and reveals that Avery has the other USB drive: the unused object from the leather satchel. Grayson immediately shifts toward action and asks whether Avery will call Grayson’s brothers or whether Grayson should.
