CHAPTER 15
Overview
Grayson’s attachment to Eve causes open conflict with Jameson, revealing how fragile old wounds around Emily remain. The visit to Skye shifts the investigation by confirming that the golden disk belonged to Tobias Hawthorne and was likely stolen by Toby as revenge. Skye denies having Toby and claims she has abandoned the Hawthorne power struggle, but her reaction proves the disk is valuable and tied to Tobias’s secrets.
Summary
On the drive to Skye Hawthorne’s house, Jameson challenges Grayson for staying instead of returning to Harvard. Jameson believes Grayson is staying because of Eve, but Grayson insists the family is under threat and argues that Eve is vulnerable without being weak. The exchange exposes Grayson’s defensiveness and Jameson’s fear that Eve’s resemblance to Emily has compromised Grayson.
The group arrives in a wealthy suburban neighborhood, where Skye answers the door in theatrical fashion. Skye needles her sons about forgiveness and abandonment, then reveals she has married Archie, the criminal defense attorney who represented her. Her new marriage suggests Skye has secured another form of comfort and protection after being forced out of Hawthorne House.
Jameson shows Skye the golden disk, and Skye’s immediate reaction proves she recognizes it, though she first denies ever seeing it. Under pressure, especially after Nash hints he could warn Archie about her past, Skye admits the disk belonged to Tobias Hawthorne. Skye says Tobias intensely questioned her when it went missing, but she insists she was not the thief.
Skye explains that Toby was furious that summer and ultimately ran off with the disk as a parting act of revenge. Avery connects this to Toby’s old instructions to her mother about something he left in Jackson and its value. When Jameson asks whether Skye has Toby, Skye avoids giving useful information at first, then denies having any of them anymore, including Toby and her sons.
Skye shifts into a bitter confession about always wanting to be loved and never feeling chosen by her parents, lovers, or children. Skye claims Tobias never viewed her as a true player, so she gave him heirs instead, but now she is finished chasing Hawthorne House, the fortune, and Tobias’s legacy. Skye presents her suburban life and marriage as her own kingdom, leaving Avery and the Hawthornes with new confirmation about the disk but no proof that Skye is behind Toby’s disappearance.
