CHAPTER 48
Overview
The clue hidden beneath the 1973 Chateau Margaux label leads Avery, Jameson, and Grayson to a chandelier in the Tea Room. By shining a flashlight through one irregular crystal, Avery reveals a projected warning: DON’T TRUST ANYONE.
The message intensifies the danger around Tobias Hawthorne’s final game, suggesting that betrayal may be built into the mystery and that Avery cannot safely assume any ally is beyond suspicion.
Summary
Avery, Jameson, and Grayson steam the label from the lone bottle of 1973 Chateau Margaux in Tobias Hawthorne’s collection and discover a pencil sketch on the back. The drawing shows a dangling teardrop crystal. Grayson guesses it might point to jewelry, but Avery remembers seeing something similar in the vault and concludes that the clue indicates a chandelier.
The group searches Hawthorne House, which contains eighteen crystal chandeliers, and identifies the correct one in the Tea Room. Because the ceilings are twenty feet high, Avery wonders whether they must climb up or bring the chandelier down. Jameson presses a hidden control panel, lowering the chandelier to eye level.
Avery, Jameson, and Grayson inspect the chandelier’s many crystals one by one, working carefully because the fixture is fragile and enormous. As they search, the close quarters keep Avery physically aware of both brothers, but the puzzle remains the focus.
Grayson finds a crystal with unusual irregularities and gives it to Avery. Avery cannot read anything on it with her naked eye, then realizes that the flashlight from the leather satchel might reveal the message. When Avery shines the flashlight through the crystal and flips it over, the refracted light projects a clear warning onto the floor: DON’T TRUST ANYONE.
