CHAPTER 16

Overview

Skye's rejection leaves Grayson and Jameson wounded, and they cope by pulling away and provoking each other until they choose to walk home together. Nash gives Avery a clearer picture of Skye as a mother: affectionate only briefly, then willing to give up her sons for Tobias Hawthorne's approval and wealth.

The chapter shifts from emotional fallout to renewed urgency when Oren reports a tunnel sensor breach. Avery realizes the alarm is probably Rebecca, tying the group's personal tensions back to the dangerous secrets hidden under Hawthorne House.

Summary

After leaving Skye, Avery, Jameson, Grayson, and Nash walk down the long driveway in tense silence broken by Jameson's mocking attempt to deflect the hurt Skye caused. Jameson jokes that Skye is not the villain this time and bitterly repeats her implication that her sons never loved her enough, making it clear that Skye's callousness has wounded him.

Grayson reacts by shutting down and announcing that he would rather walk the eighteen miles back to Hawthorne House than ride with the others. Jameson needles Grayson for sounding emotionless, and the brothers nearly turn their pain into a fight before deciding to walk together. Avery protests, but Nash calmly opens the SUV door for her and chooses to leave the brothers to their own stubbornness.

During the ride back, Avery thinks about how differently Skye's cruelty affects Grayson and Jameson, and she connects Skye's hunger for attention and power to Tobias Hawthorne's lifelong manipulation. Nash then tells Avery that Skye loved pregnancy and the first days with each baby, but always gave her sons to Tobias afterward because she wanted Tobias's approval and the Hawthorne fortune more than she wanted to stay with her children.

Nash reveals that watching Skye repeatedly leave shaped his own hopes for a family. When Avery tentatively says, "If you had a baby," Nash corrects her to "When I have a baby" and says he imagines Libby with a little girl, showing how seriously he envisions a future with Libby.

As Oren drives back to Hawthorne House, he receives a security call and stops outside the gates. A sensor has been tripped in the tunnels, and Oren begins ordering teams to respond from both sides. Avery, remembering how they left Rebecca in the tunnels, stops him and concludes that the breach is not an attack but Rebecca.
