CHAPTER 59

Overview

Avery and the others confront Isaiah Alexander, and Xander learns that his father knew about him, wanted him, and was kept away by Tobias Hawthorne's manipulations. Isaiah reveals that Tobias blacklisted him and that a paternity test was apparently faked, deepening the Hawthorne family's history of control and harm.

Isaiah also confirms that Vincent Blake is dangerous, describing a pattern of accidents and disappearances surrounding Blake's enemies. The chapter gives Avery stronger evidence of Blake's threat while forcing Xander into an emotional reckoning with the father he thought had abandoned him.

Summary

Avery, Xander, Thea, Rebecca, and a security team arrive at Isaiah Alexander's small-town mechanic shop after evading paparazzi. Isaiah is working under a car and reacts to Xander's arrival with calm recognition rather than surprise, which unsettles Xander. Their shared interests and mannerisms quickly reveal a connection, and Isaiah admits he has known about Xander since before Xander was born.

Xander struggles to process that Isaiah knew about him and may have wanted him. When the conversation turns to Tobias Hawthorne, Isaiah explains that he worked for Tobias as a young prodigy until Tobias fired and blacklisted him. Isaiah says the firing was not about punishing him for his relationship with Skye, but about ensuring Isaiah lacked the resources to fight for custody of Xander.

Isaiah reveals that he did try to claim Xander after Xander was born, but a court-ordered paternity test came back negative. Xander realizes Tobias and Skye must have faked the DNA test, and Isaiah says he could neither prove the deception nor get near his son. When Xander asks whether Isaiah wanted him, Isaiah answers that he still does, overwhelming Xander and causing him to bolt from the shop.

Rebecca and Thea go after Xander, leaving Avery to ask the questions Xander cannot. Avery presses Isaiah about Vincent Blake, and Isaiah explains that Blake hired him after Tobias ruined him, offering him money, freedom, and a position running an innovation lab. Isaiah accepted because Blake promised he was not afraid of Tobias.

Isaiah says he eventually quit because he noticed a pattern around Vincent Blake: people who blocked Blake suffered accidents or disappeared, though nothing could be proven or tied directly to him. Isaiah used the money he had saved to buy the mechanic shop so he would never again have to work for men like Blake or Tobias. Rebecca and Thea return without Xander, reporting that he has gone to a doughnut shop, and Isaiah calmly says he will remain at the shop.
