Avery has kept Toby’s daughter, Eve, secret for months at Toby’s request and because of the danger tied to the Hawthorne legacy. When Oren reports that Eve is at the gates, Avery refuses Grayson’s help, knowing that Eve’s resemblance to Emily Laughlin would devastate him.

Oren drives Avery to the gates, where Avery sees Eve in a stained white dress, visibly hurt and nearly identical to Emily. Avery lets Eve onto the estate to keep paparazzi or gossip sites from photographing her, then notices blood on Eve’s temple and asks what happened.

Eve tells Avery that Toby is not okay: someone took him. She explains that Toby found her months ago and they were living together quietly until Toby saw someone the previous week and decided they had to run. Eve forced Toby to take her by threatening to go to the press, and the two went off the grid while someone tracked them.

Eve says Toby eventually told her they had to split up and meet again three days later, but Toby never appeared. Instead, someone ambushed Eve, used Toby Hawthorne’s real name, warned her to forget him, knocked her unconscious, and stole everything she had. After using an emergency stash to buy a bus ticket, Eve came to Avery because Toby had told Eve to do so if anything happened to him.

Avery wants to involve the authorities, but Eve argues that no one will believe her and that Toby specifically sent her to Avery. Oren warns that calling the authorities may limit their options and suggests preparing for a ransom demand while sending a team to investigate the meeting site. Before Avery can contain the situation, Grayson arrives, sees Eve, and mistakes her for Emily.
