CHAPTER 85
Overview
Jameson arrives after Avery’s victory and offers Avery a characteristically daring ride home, reinforcing the bond between them and the thrill they share in high-stakes games. Toby’s puzzle-cube message gives Avery emotional certainty by linking Avery to Avery’s mother.
Avery then rejects the option of sheltering the Hawthorne fortune in a trust and chooses to keep the power and responsibility in Avery’s own hands. This decision marks Avery’s shift from surviving the inheritance to actively shaping what Avery will do with it.
Summary
After Avery wins Blake’s challenge, Jameson arrives and jokingly casts Grayson as the rescued damsel. Avery is relieved to see Jameson because he is the person most able to understand the thrill of her victory and the way the gamble felt when Avery realized her plan would work.
Jameson reveals that Jameson came to give Avery a ride home, but instead of a car, Jameson has brought a helicopter. Grayson notes that Jameson is probably not allowed to land it there, and Jameson answers with his usual appetite for risk before asking Avery if Avery wants to learn to fly.
That night, Avery studies the cube Toby gave Avery. Avery discovers that the cube is made of interlocking pieces, solves it, and finds words carved into each part: Toby sees much of Avery’s mother in Avery. The message matters more to Avery than defeating Blake because it gives Avery a profound sense of connection and certainty.
The next morning, before anyone else wakes, Avery goes to the Great Room, where Tobias Hawthorne’s will was originally read, and lights a fire. Holding the trust paperwork Alisa prepared, Avery reflects on the fortune, the power, and the possibility of tying Avery’s assets up so someone else can manage the responsibility for a while.
Libby enters and, after hearing what the papers are, encourages Avery not to wait. Avery throws the trust documents into the fire, choosing not to hand off the burden of the Hawthorne fortune. As the papers burn, Avery feels ready to accept the power and responsibility Avery has inherited.
Afterward, Avery begins carrying the leather notebook Grayson gave Avery everywhere. With only days left to make plans, Avery knows that lawyers, financial advisors, and Texas power players will oppose what Avery intends to do, but Avery has decided not to rely on the status quo.
