CHAPTER 73

Overview

Avery and Jameson find that the maze chamber does not contain Will Blake’s remains, only Toby’s accusatory messages about identity and guilt. Mr. Laughlin is forced to reveal that he knows the real burial site and that Mallory, not Tobias, struck Will/Liam Blake after he used and attacked her. The revelation reframes the decades-old secret: Tobias likely protected Mallory by letting Blake’s son die, while Mr. Laughlin still wants the truth buried to save his daughter.

Summary

Avery and Jameson dig until the ground gives way, exposing a hidden chamber beneath the hedge maze. Jameson jumps in first, and Avery follows, expecting to find Will Blake’s remains, but the chamber is empty.

Avery discovers that a torch in the wall rotates and ignites, revealing messages in Toby’s handwriting. The walls read that Toby was never a Hawthorne, would never be a Blake, and considered himself complicit; the floor adds, “Try again, Father.” Avery realizes the body was never there and that the chamber was another clue, not the grave.

Mr. Laughlin helps Avery and Jameson out, then blocks Avery from leaving. After mentioning Alisa’s abduction and Nash’s request for help, Avery realizes Mr. Laughlin knows where the remains are. Mr. Laughlin resists, saying some things should stay buried, but Avery threatens to destroy the maze if necessary to save Alisa.

Rebecca, Thea, and Xander arrive, and Rebecca confronts her grandfather. Rebecca recalls that one part of the maze was always off-limits to her, proving she may know where to dig. She also reveals that her mother, Mallory, said Liam Blake was angry about her pregnancy and that Mallory had stolen something from Tobias Hawthorne’s office to lure Liam into meeting her.

Mr. Laughlin finally explains the old crime. Will/Liam Blake had manipulated sixteen-year-old Mallory and got her pregnant; when Mallory could not give him what she had promised, Liam demeaned and attacked her. Tobias Hawthorne, who had followed Mallory, intervened, and Mallory beat Liam repeatedly with a brick. Mr. Laughlin admits Liam was still alive when Tobias sent Mr. Laughlin away with Mallory, implying Tobias let Liam die rather than get help.

Mr. Laughlin says he later realized Toby had moved and reburied something but never asked Tobias what happened. He yields enough to tell Rebecca to show the others the spot if she must, but he orders her to protect Mallory if Vincent Blake asks the truth, even if that means blaming Mr. Laughlin.
