CHAPTER 46
Overview
Xander’s supposed emergency leads the group to karaoke, but Grayson’s absence and the sound of destruction reveal a deeper crisis. Avery and Jameson find Grayson breaking under the weight of Tobias Hawthorne’s expectations, and Jameson draws him into a fight that forces Grayson to voice his anger and grief.
Grayson chooses to join Avery and Jameson in Tobias’s game because he wants to save Toby, especially for Eve and Avery. His sharp reading of the photograph’s date as a wine vintage sends the investigation toward the Hawthorne wine cellar.
Summary
Xander’s decoded emergency turns out to be a gathering in the Hawthorne theater for karaoke. Xander tries to rally everyone into performing, but Grayson is missing, and the mood changes when crashes come from the direction of the music room. Nash stops Xander from rushing off and sends Jameson and Avery instead, implying that Grayson needs them specifically.
Jameson and Avery find Grayson in the music room, playing violin with devastating precision beside shards of a destroyed instrument. Grayson nearly smashes another violin, but Jameson stops him by saying Grayson is scaring Avery and has ignored Xander’s 911. Grayson apologizes for damaging Avery’s property, but Avery focuses on his pain and tells Grayson that he plays beautifully.
Grayson bitterly rejects beauty as a lie, exposing how deeply Tobias Hawthorne’s expectations still wound him. Jameson provokes Grayson into a physical fight, understanding that Grayson needs an outlet. During the struggle, Grayson admits that he once believed the brothers had failed Tobias by not being worthy enough, but now questions what there was to be worthy of when Tobias was so ruthless.
Jameson challenges Grayson to name what he wants for himself. Grayson says he wants Toby returned for Eve and for Avery. Avery explains that she and Jameson believe Tobias’s game may connect to Toby’s kidnapping and may reveal something useful, and Grayson immediately agrees to play and win because of who the Hawthornes are.
Jameson gives Avery the 1973 photograph so Avery can explain the clue to Grayson, a meaningful gesture that includes her rather than shutting her out. After Avery retrieves the remaining game objects—the steamer, flashlight, and USB drive—Grayson studies the photo and rejects Jameson’s idea that the date is a code. Grayson identifies it as a vintage, concluding that the next step is the wine cellar.
