CHAPTER 42

Overview

Avery brings Tobias Hawthorne’s blue-green glass clue to the pool, believing the satchel’s “Don’t breathe” clue points to water. There, Avery’s explanation of the bag reveals to Grayson that Tobias knew about Eve, causing Grayson to confront the possibility that his grandfather’s teachings about honor and family were built on hypocrisy.

Grayson rejects Tobias’s posthumous games and tells Avery to stop, drawing a painful line between them. Avery refuses to quit and dives into the pool, choosing action and aligning herself with Jameson’s relentless approach.

Summary

Avery goes to the Hawthorne House pool at night carrying the blue-green glass circle from Tobias Hawthorne’s satchel and a towel. She connects the clue “Don’t breathe” to water, turns on the pool lights, and accidentally activates the fountain before focusing the lights on the water.

Grayson is already swimming. When Avery explains that the glass came from a bag Tobias ordered delivered if Avery and Eve ever met, Grayson realizes that Tobias knew about Eve, Toby’s daughter. The revelation devastates and enrages Grayson because Tobias allowed Eve to grow up neglected and hidden from the Hawthorne family.

Grayson’s anger expands into a broader crisis of faith in Tobias. Grayson admits that he once justified Tobias’s impossible standards as preparation for leadership, believing Tobias was honorable and teaching Grayson duty. Now, after the files exposing Tobias’s secrets and the truth about Eve, Grayson questions whether Tobias’s ideals of honor and family were lies.

Avery tries to suggest that there may be more to the puzzle and that Tobias’s motives may not be fully understood. Grayson rejects this as another manipulation from a dead man who is still pulling strings. He warns Avery to stop playing Tobias’s games and tells her not to touch him because he believes he is broken and might break Avery, too.

Grayson leaves, and his command to stop feels final to Avery. Instead of giving up, Avery thinks of Jameson, who never stops, and of who Avery is with him. Avery strips down, sets the glass carefully by the pool, and dives into the water to keep following the clue.
