CHAPTER 67

Overview

Eve reveals her true allegiance by threatening Avery with a gun and admitting that Eve helped Blake abduct Toby to force access to Hawthorne secrets. Grayson overhears enough to reject Eve’s manipulation, including her attempt to weaponize his guilt over Emily, and keeps the USB from her. Avery lets Eve be removed from the estate, shifting the conflict from Eve’s deception to a direct confrontation with Vincent Blake.

Summary

Avery removes a new-looking USB drive from the hidden crypt and realizes it could not have been there for twenty years. Eve appears in the chapel doorway, quickly drops her vulnerable act, and demands to know what Avery found. When Oren blocks Eve, Eve pulls a gun and points it at Avery.

As Oren orders Eve to disarm, Avery stalls and connects Eve’s behavior to Toby’s abduction. Eve admits that she helped Blake abduct Toby because Toby would not bring Eve to Hawthorne House. Eve also reveals that Mallory told her Liam did not leave and that there was blood, explaining why Eve expected human remains in the crypt.

Oren pins Eve after Eve lowers the gun, but Eve continues negotiating from the floor. Eve makes clear that Eve’s loyalty is to Vincent Blake, not Toby, and that Eve wants the USB so Eve can prove herself and earn one of Blake’s seals. Avery understands that Eve’s apparent wounds and vulnerability were tools Eve used to gain trust and power.

Grayson arrives and sees Oren restraining Eve. Eve begs Grayson to help and get Avery’s USB, but Grayson takes the drive and refuses to give it to Eve. Grayson says he heard what happened, tells Avery that Grayson owes Avery more than Avery realizes, and resists Eve’s attempts to exploit his guilt over Emily’s death.

Eve threatens to kill herself if Grayson lets Oren send Eve away empty-handed, but Grayson tells Eve that Eve is responsible for Eve’s own choices. Grayson also explains that the USB would be useless without a decoder and likely a second drive, because Tobias Hawthorne would not leave valuable knowledge unprotected. When Oren’s men arrive, Avery chooses not to call the police and instead has Eve escorted off the estate, deciding that Vincent Blake is the real threat.
