CHAPTER 44
Overview
Avery and Jameson analyze the photograph and remaining objects, then reframe the entire puzzle by asking why it began only after Eve appeared. Jameson proposes that Tobias Hawthorne may have built the game to help identify Toby's abductor, transforming the inheritance puzzle into a possible path toward rescue.
The chapter also deepens Jameson's conflict with Tobias's legacy, as Jameson admits he recognizes the same hunger to win in himself. Avery anchors him emotionally, challenging the idea that Jameson is doomed to become his grandfather.
Summary
After Jameson gets Avery into a hot shower, Avery begins sorting the newest clue into possible meaningful elements: the photograph, the name Margaux, the French location, and the date. Avery and Jameson consider whether the date might be literal or encoded, and whether the other details are clues or distractions.
Jameson suggests scanning the photograph for a reverse image search, while Avery notes that would only work if the same image exists online. Avery proposes identifying the church in the background and asking Zara and Nan whether they recognize the three women or the name Margaux.
Avery and Jameson also return to the remaining objects from the package: a steamer, a flashlight, and a USB. Because three items have already been used and three remain, Jameson says Tobias Hawthorne would advise stepping back, reconsidering the beginning, and thinking about the trigger for the game.
Jameson realizes that the game began when Eve arrived at Hawthorne House. Since Eve came only because Toby was abducted, Jameson wonders whether Tobias Hawthorne designed this game to connect to the current threat and possibly reveal who took Toby. Avery feels a surge of hope, though Jameson worries he may be seeing what he wants to see in his grandfather's plans.
The conversation shifts into Jameson's fear of being like Tobias Hawthorne. Jameson admits that he understands Tobias's ruthless drive to win and believes he might once have made the same choices, but Avery insists that ability does not equal inevitability. Jameson says he cannot hate Tobias because Tobias brought Avery into his life, and after an intimate moment, Jameson turns them back to the game.
