CHAPTER 9
Overview
Avery withholds information about the disk from Eve while privately returning to the unresolved mystery of its value and possible link to Toby’s disappearance. Eve’s arrival deepens Avery’s fear that Tobias Hawthorne’s entire inheritance game might have gone differently if he had known about Toby’s daughter.
Oren’s investigation confirms that shots may have been fired near Toby and Eve’s planned meeting point, raising the stakes and suggesting real danger. Rather than wait passively, Avery decides to test Eve’s trustworthiness, with Xander turning that effort into one of his eccentric games.
Summary
Avery decides not to tell Eve about the mysterious disk, reasoning that she still does not know whether Toby’s abduction is connected to it. Feeling responsible for Eve, Avery asks Mrs. Laughlin to prepare a room for her; Mrs. Laughlin immediately recognizes Eve as family and is moved to tears.
Later, Avery works alone in Tobias Hawthorne’s study while giving Jameson and Grayson space to process Eve’s resemblance to Emily. Avery opens the hidden compartment in Tobias’s desk and reviews her and Jameson’s research on the quarter-sized engraved disk Toby once took from her, including Toby’s message to Avery’s mother suggesting that whatever he left with Jackson was immensely valuable.
Avery realizes that months of research into rare artifacts, secret societies, coins, treasures, and Hawthorne properties have produced no answers. She wonders who knows about the disk, its value, and Toby’s survival, then revisits Tobias’s file on her and questions whether Tobias ever knew Eve existed. Avery feels that, if Tobias had known about Toby’s daughter, he might have chosen Eve instead of Avery.
Xander emerges through a wall with pie, followed by Max, and Avery confirms that she already knew about Eve. Xander is hurt that Avery kept the secret from him, though he admits he would probably have told Rebecca because of Eve’s resemblance to Emily. The conversation turns playful, but the tension over Eve’s arrival remains.
Oren calls Avery with an update: his team found no physical evidence at the meeting point where Eve was supposed to meet Toby, but there was a 911 call reporting shots fired hours before Eve arrived. Oren assigns someone to shadow Eve and warns Avery to stay put for twenty-four hours because Toby may not be the only target.
Avery refuses to do nothing. Believing she needs to determine whether Eve can be trusted and whether Eve knows anything useful, Avery tells Xander not to cancel the welcome festivities. Xander proposes using Chutes and Ladders to assess Eve’s character.
