Avery follows the tunnel alarm and finds Rebecca Laughlin beneath the tennis courts, standing at a dead end. Rebecca initially thinks Xander has come after her and orders Avery away, but Avery refuses to leave.

Rebecca explains that she has met Eve and told Eve the truth about Toby's adoption. Eve now wants to meet Mallory Laughlin, Rebecca's mother and Eve's biological grandmother. Avery worries whether Mallory can handle the revelation, given Mallory's history of giving Toby up for adoption, losing Emily, and believing Toby is also dead.

Seeing Eve devastates Rebecca because Eve looks and sounds like Emily. Rebecca confesses that her last interaction with Emily was a fight about the plans that led to Emily's death, and Rebecca believes Emily would have made forgiveness difficult. Rebecca also reveals that even cutting her hair feels like a betrayal because Emily liked their hair long.

Avery tries to reassure Rebecca that Rebecca is her own person and is not wrong for wanting to move on. Rebecca admits she fears she is not good at living for herself and wonders if Eve's arrival proves that she can never escape Emily's shadow. Avery asks whether Rebecca has told Thea about Eve, but Rebecca deflects.

Rebecca ultimately says Avery cannot fix the situation because Rebecca must tell Mallory that she has a grandchild who resembles the daughter Mallory would have chosen. Avery offers to go with Rebecca, but Rebecca refuses, saying she is better at wanting things now but does not get to want Avery's help for this.
