CHAPTER 56: GIGI
Overview
Gigi, Knox, and Brady confront a highly detailed miniature mansion-and-castle puzzle, and Gigi’s unusual perspective helps her spot what the others miss. Knox warns Gigi not to trust anyone in the competition, deepening the tension around his loyalty to Brady and his connection to Orion Thorp. Gigi solves the empty-throne clue by finding the queen doll and pulling a dragon-headed scepter, which opens a hidden cabinet of numbered books.
Summary
Gigi, Knox, and Brady enter a miniature world far more elaborate than a simple dollhouse: a Victorian mansion, a fairy-tale castle, shops, carriages, an early car, dozens of dolls, and countless tiny accessories. Knox searches by methodically dismantling and reassembling pieces, while Brady studies the scene in stillness. Gigi chooses a different tactic and climbs the bookshelves to see the whole puzzle from above.
Knox follows Gigi upward, frustrated and protective, warning her that she is not being careful enough. Gigi privately questions why Knox would work with Orion Thorp and Calla’s family when Knox knows Brady believes they were involved in Calla’s disappearance. Knox tells Gigi that Brady is not her friend and that no one in the game is, especially Knox himself.
From the high vantage point, Gigi notices that the puzzle lacks dragons despite the warning on the door, and Knox observes that the mansion’s hidden fifth floor may contain more than they can see. Back on the floor, Gigi studies the castle’s access points and the dolls’ concentrations, then realizes the king is on his throne while the queen’s throne is empty, matching the earlier poem’s reference to an empty throne.
After searching the Victorian mansion, Gigi finds the queen doll under a bed and places it on the empty throne. Brady recognizes the connection and praises Gigi, but nothing happens until Gigi tests the queen’s accessories. Removing the crown does nothing, but the scepter resists, and its head is shaped like a dragon.
When Gigi pulls the dragon scepter free, a popping sound comes from the Victorian mansion. Knox and Brady locate the source in the parlor, where a cabinet of tiny books opens. Plastic books spill out, each marked with a number, revealing the next stage of the puzzle.
