CHAPTER 11: GIGI
Overview
Gigi continues mapping Hawthorne Island and finds a hidden chalk clue, MANGA and RA, which she records before erasing it to preserve her advantage. Her exploration leads her to a boathouse, where she meets Odette, an observant older competitor using ornate opera glasses to spy on Brady and another player.
Odette’s revelation that Brady and the other man know each other and were discussing a dead girl shifts Gigi’s understanding of the game. The chapter deepens the sense that several players have private agendas and dangerous histories beyond the public competition.
Summary
After two hours of exploring Hawthorne Island, Gigi is exhausted but keeps mapping landmarks on her arms. On the south side, she finds a stone staircase leading down to the rocky shore. The moss on the final steps seems suspicious because none of the other steps are covered, so Gigi clears it away.
Under the moss, Gigi discovers chalk writing: MANGA on one step and RA on another. She connects the words to Japanese graphic novels and the Egyptian sun god, but the position of the sun reminds Gigi that she has only until sunset. Rather than stop to solve the clue, Gigi writes both words on her midriff for later and then scuffs the chalk away so other players cannot use it.
Continuing around the shoreline to the southeast side of the island, Gigi finds a gothic-looking boathouse built over the water. She sketches its arches and slips onto her skin, then notices a ladder in the wall. Following her instinct to climb, Gigi reaches the top of the archway and finds an old woman already there.
The woman, Odette, is using jeweled opera glasses to watch Brady and another player on the eastern shore. Odette claims their body language shows they know each other, and Gigi realizes Odette is also reading their lips. After teasing Gigi with a false answer, Odette reveals that the two men were talking about a girl who is dead, raising new questions about Brady’s hidden connections and the game’s dangers.
