CHAPTER 46: GIGI

Overview

Gigi confronts Knox over the hidden bag and the bug in her necklace, suspecting his sponsor planted the supplies to cheat. Brady confirms that Knox is telling the truth, forcing Gigi to realize the bag may not belong to the official game at all.

The chapter shifts the danger from player rivalry to possible outside interference: the damp wetsuit and hidden listening device suggest someone else may be moving around Hawthorne Island and monitoring the contestants.

Summary

Gigi connects the wetsuit, oxygen tank, necklace, and knife from the hidden bag to Brady’s earlier explanation of sponsors who hire players, stack odds, and bet on outcomes. Because Knox hid the bag instead of bringing it back to the house, Gigi suspects that Knox’s sponsor planted the supplies for him outside the official game.

Gigi returns to the chamber, where Brady and Knox are still tense and silent, and confronts Knox with the listening device she found in her necklace. Knox insists that he kept the bag only to prevent others from stealing it, not because he planted it or knew its source.

Gigi asks Brady about Knox’s sponsor. Brady identifies the sponsor as Orion Thorp, from a powerful Louisiana family, but when Knox demands that Brady judge whether Knox is lying, Brady confirms that Knox is telling the truth about not being involved with the bag.

Forced to reconsider, Gigi speaks into the bug, announcing that she knows someone is listening. The action recalls her past habit of addressing a possible watcher after previously being followed by a professional, and it shifts Gigi’s suspicion away from Knox toward an unknown outside observer.

Gigi reasons that the necklace, knife, wetsuit, and other items were too much of a “motherlode” to fit a fair competitive game. She remembers Nash complimenting the necklace as if it were hers and Avery acknowledging hidden treasure without looking at Gigi, suggesting the game makers may not have recognized Gigi’s find as official.

Brady follows Gigi’s logic: if the objects are not part of the game, someone else may have placed them. Knox adds that the wetsuit in the bag was damp, meaning it had recently been used, and Brady concludes that another sponsored player—or even someone besides the players and game makers—may be on Hawthorne Island.
