CHAPTER 35: GIGI
Overview
As the Hearts pull ahead, Gigi’s team remains stuck with a knife, sheath, coins, and mounting interpersonal tension. Knox and Brady’s unresolved history around Calla threatens to derail them, but Gigi redirects the room by forcing emotional distractions and then revealing a hidden clue on her body.
Brady helps Gigi recognize that MANGA RA is an anagram for ANAGRAM, unlocking the method behind their clues. The realization lets Gigi connect the coins to the solution and suddenly identify all three answers, shifting her team from stalled to poised for progress.
Summary
Gigi, Knox, and Brady realize that the Hearts have solved their entire puzzle while their own team has only a knife, a sheath, and Knox’s three dimes. Brady examines the sheath and notes that it has thirteen carved notches, but the discovery does not immediately lead to a solution.
Tension rises between Knox and Brady when Knox challenges Brady about Calla, and Brady replies that the difference between them is that Brady loved her. Brady adds that he already gave Knox a second chance last year, making clear that their conflict is personal and long-standing.
Gigi intervenes before the argument escalates by forcing both men to answer what makes them happy. Brady names his mother’s dog, That Dog, while Knox grudgingly lists money, fried chicken, old cars, expensive scotch, and constellations. Knox’s mention of constellations makes Brady go still, suggesting it carries emotional significance.
The distraction sparks Gigi’s next move. Gigi exposes the words she wrote on her midriff earlier: MANGA and RA. Brady studies the letters closely, traces RA on Gigi’s skin, and prompts Knox to rearrange the letters, though Knox snaps that Gigi is eighteen and refuses to engage with Brady’s visible fascination.
Gigi realizes that MANGA RA rearranges into ANAGRAM, giving the team the puzzle principle they need. Connecting anagrams with the coins, including the three dimes and the earlier quarters, Gigi suddenly sees all three answers at once and feels triumphantly ready to solve their room.
