CHAPTER 69: LYRA
Overview
Trapped in the blackout, Lyra, Grayson, and Odette confront the danger of being locked inside and the unresolved accusation that a Hawthorne caused Lyra’s father’s death. Odette hints that Lyra and Grayson misunderstand the truth, but a seizure interrupts the revelation before she can explain.
When the power returns, Nash declares the game still active with just over an hour until dawn. Odette refuses medical help, and Lyra decides their best move is to follow the hint toward the dock and the answers waiting there.
Summary
In the dark, Grayson grows suspicious that the power should have returned already. Odette challenges his assumption that the group is safest inside the secure house, warning that being locked in would be dangerous if there were a fire.
Odette’s comment pushes Lyra to think of the island’s burned trees and her father’s death. Odette then suggests that Grayson and Lyra are “the right kind of disaster,” a Hawthorne and a girl with every reason to avoid Hawthornes. Lyra understands this as a reference to her father’s final words: “A Hawthorne did this.”
Lyra says the accusation aloud, and Grayson acknowledges that Tobias Hawthorne was capable of using people as tools. Odette sharply insists that neither Lyra nor Grayson knows what they think they know, beginning to say “The tr—” before suddenly collapsing with a seizure.
Grayson reaches Odette first, turns her on her side, and tries to steady her until the seizure stops. Odette regains consciousness and immediately resists being treated like an emergency.
The lights come back on, and Nash announces over the speakers that the outage was a technical problem. The game continues with sixty-three minutes until dawn, and if at least one team reaches the dock by the deadline, the rules still stand. Grayson wants Lyra to press the emergency button for help, but Odette refuses, focused again on playing.
Lyra recognizes that Odette has withheld whatever she was about to reveal. Deciding that the path forward is toward the dock and toward answers, Lyra proposes that they take their hint.
