CHAPTER 72: LYRA

Overview

Lyra, Grayson, and Odette's next hint challenge turns the game inward by forcing the players to draw one another and look closely at what they would rather avoid. During the challenge, Odette reveals that she is dying of glioblastoma and has chosen not to pursue surgery, then warns Lyra and Grayson about the dangerous power of love. The chapter ends with Odette drawing a calla lily instead of Grayson, a startling image that clearly strikes Lyra as meaningful and shifts the puzzle toward Odette's secrets.

Summary

After Grayson chooses door number two, a hidden compartment opens in the mosaic floor and reveals a flatbed scanner, a sketchbook, and charcoal. Jameson explains over the speakers that door number one was a puzzle box, but this door requires Lyra, Grayson, and Odette to draw one another to earn a hint. Avery clarifies that the drawings do not have to be good; the players simply have to look closely and scan one drawing of each teammate.

Grayson recognizes that Avery and Jameson have designed the challenge to force a personal confrontation. When Grayson turns to Odette, Odette refuses to be his subject and directs Grayson toward Lyra. Grayson draws Lyra in tense silence, and Lyra feels the intensity of Grayson's attention before Grayson scans the drawing and receives the first confirmation ding.

Lyra refuses to draw Grayson and instead chooses Odette, partly because Odette's refusal leaves that arrangement possible. As Lyra studies Odette's face, Lyra sees traces of Odette's past and asks directly what Odette is dying of. Odette answers that she has glioblastoma, discovered early but ultimately fatal, and explains that she is not willing to undergo brain surgery for the chance of only a little more time.

Grayson presses Odette about possible treatment, but Odette stands by her choice and reflects on a long life filled with marriages, losses, and powerful loves. Odette warns both Lyra and Grayson that love is strange, wild, comforting, and cursed. Lyra finishes and scans Odette's portrait, earning the second confirmation ding.

For the final drawing, Odette takes the sketchbook and charcoal and appears to be studying Lyra before turning toward Grayson. Lyra expects Odette to draw Grayson, but when Odette finishes quickly and hands the sketchbook back, the page shows a calla lily instead. The image shocks Lyra and leaves her breathless, suggesting that Odette has delivered a message rather than simply completed the challenge.
