CHAPTER 31: LYRA

Overview

Lyra and Grayson are forced into an intimate, tense collaboration when the chandelier clue requires Grayson to lift Lyra high enough to search the crystals. Lyra retrieves a crystal etched with a sword, confirming that the room’s design echoes Tobias Hawthorne’s final game and deepening the emotional and symbolic pressure on her.

Entering “sword” advances the game and reveals a scoreboard with the heart team earning a point. Grayson’s observation that the answer is also a clue shifts the room from one solved puzzle to the next stage of the contest.

Summary

After Odette’s wall panel lowers the chandelier, Lyra realizes the next clue is far out of reach. Lyra resists the obvious solution because being lifted by Grayson would force physical closeness she does not want to acknowledge, but Odette points out that the furniture is fixed and that only Lyra is light and agile enough.

Grayson argues that the chandelier is not a distraction. He connects this room to Tobias Hawthorne’s final game, which began with adages and a girl and ended with a crystal chandelier, suggesting that Avery and the other designers are deliberately echoing that pattern. Odette sharpens the point by noting that there is “again” a girl, putting Lyra directly into the parallel.

Lyra agrees to let Grayson lift her. The physical contact unsettles Lyra, who tries to focus on the crystals instead of Grayson’s hands and the memories and feelings they stir. Grayson rotates Lyra beneath the chandelier until she finds one loose crystal, then lifts her higher so she can pull it free.

Lyra discovers that the crystal has a sword etched into it. Odette identifies Lyra as a dancer and calls Grayson very much a Hawthorne, a comment that reminds Lyra of the family power and danger behind him. Grayson, visibly tense, walks away and asks for a moment.

Lyra tests the word “sword” on the screen despite Grayson’s warning that the answer will not be so simple. The word turns green, a chime sounds, and a scoreboard appears showing a heart, diamond, and club, with the heart now scored at 1. Grayson immediately concludes that “sword” is not only the answer but likely the next clue.
