CHAPTER 83: GIGI
Overview
Gigi tries to confront the hidden person she believes is on Hawthorne Island and threatens to expose him to Grayson, especially if Eve sent him. Her decision to keep the bug for Xander suggests she is ready to stop protecting the secret.
The confrontation turns dangerous when an unidentified man attacks Gigi from behind and appears to drug her. The chapter shifts Gigi from reluctant secret-keeper to immediate victim, raising the stakes around Eve's possible involvement and the hidden threat on the island.
Summary
Gigi returns to the place where she found the bag and calls out toward the ocean, convinced that someone is nearby and listening. With her departure from Hawthorne Island set for noon, Gigi tries to force the hidden person to reveal himself by threatening to tell Grayson that the person is on the island.
Gigi reasons aloud that if this person is present, Eve may have sent him, which would make the situation dangerous. Although Gigi admits that she does not fully understand Eve beyond Eve's wealth and twisted Hawthorne connection, Gigi remembers that Grayson warned her to stay away from Eve.
As Gigi keeps talking, her frustration turns personal. Gigi admits that she hates secrets and, more painfully, that she hates what has been happening to her. Gigi takes the remains of the necklace from her pocket, except for the bug, and throws the necklace into the ocean.
Gigi warns that she will give the bug to Xander, but no one answers. When Gigi turns to leave, a man grabs her from behind, clamps a sweet-smelling rag over her mouth, and restrains her while telling her, "Easy there, sunshine."
