CHAPTER 74: ROHAN
Overview
After reaching the shore first, Rohan and Savannah find themselves alone before dawn, with no Hawthornes or Avery present yet. Their private exchange becomes a strategic game of truth or dare, revealing dangerous pieces of both their motives.
Rohan admits a partial connection to The Mercy, while Savannah reveals that her goal in the Grandest Game is revenge, reframing her participation as personal rather than financial.
Summary
Rohan and Savannah descend the rocky, poorly lit path toward the shore after making it out of the game. A light comes on at the dock, but Savannah notes that no one is waiting there: neither the Hawthornes nor Avery.
Rohan reasons that the game makers will likely appear just before dawn, and he frames the moment as a pause to see whether the other teams can escape in time. For now, Rohan and Savannah are alone, with victory already tasting familiar and satisfying to Rohan.
Savannah abruptly challenges Rohan to truth or dare. Rohan suspects she is trying to manipulate him, especially if a dare could force him to hand over the longsword, so he chooses truth. Savannah asks for the name of the organization he works for.
Rohan considers how dangerous it is to speak the name of the Devil’s Mercy, but he also imagines winning the Grandest Game and becoming the Proprietor. Taking that future power as a reason to decide what secrets he may reveal, Rohan gives Savannah a partial but true answer: The Mercy.
Rohan then turns the game back on Savannah and asks what she truly wants if she is not playing for the money. Savannah approaches him closely, using tension rather than evasion, and finally gives him a partial but honest answer: she is playing for revenge.
