CHAPTER 32: GIGI
Overview
Gigi’s team makes little immediate progress on the room’s puzzle, but Gigi uncovers more tension between Knox and Brady and pushes toward the secrets surrounding their past. Knox’s athletic search of the empty upper shelves yields three tarnished dimes, adding another possible game object to the room’s inventory.
The chapter strengthens Gigi’s role as an energetic investigator who both annoys and disarms her teammates, while Brady’s guarded kindness hints that Knox’s history, training, and connection to names like Calla and Severin may matter beyond this room.
Summary
Gigi notices that another team has scored and guesses it is probably Savannah’s, while Knox bitterly comments on how much of the Grandest Game involves family connections. Gigi uses Knox’s wording and attitude to press him about whether he and Brady are brothers, or something close to brothers, but Knox avoids answering and demands Gigi’s knife.
Knox argues that objects in the Grandest Game usually have a purpose and wants to inspect the knife, but Gigi refuses because Knox has already tried to steal it. Brady quietly tells Knox to leave Gigi alone, and Gigi observes that neither man denies her suggestion about their bond. Gigi then tries to ease the tension by joking that she will become Knox’s annoyingly upbeat little-sister figure.
Gigi shifts focus to the room itself, noticing that the upper walls are lined with empty bookshelves. She repeatedly tries to jump high enough to reach them from the desk and the throne of swords, but fails. Knox catches Gigi when she falls, then stops Gigi from trying again, removes his jacket, and climbs up himself with practiced strength.
While Knox searches the shelves, Gigi talks with Brady. Brady gently challenges Gigi’s claim that her bones are metaphorically bendy, and Gigi launches into possible puzzle ideas before apologizing for being “A Lot.” Brady responds kindly, saying his brain likes “A Lot,” and Gigi is pleased by the connection.
Brady explains that Knox’s ability comes from training, then warns Gigi that Knox does not let people in. Gigi privately thinks of Brady and Calla as exceptions and asks who Severin is, but Brady refuses to answer. Knox returns from the shelves with three tarnished dimes and says that if Gigi’s idea about comparing Scrabble tiles to poetry magnets fails, she will have to show them the knife.
