CHAPTER 42: GIGI
Overview
Gigi turns her emergency-button press into a ridiculous bathroom excuse, preventing Avery and the game makers from discovering Knox and Brady’s fight. After Knox leaves the chamber, Brady reveals more about Knox’s dangerous nature and their childhood bond, showing why Brady’s mother’s illness affects both men so deeply.
The chapter shifts the emotional stakes of Gigi’s team from puzzle-solving to trust, loyalty, and damage control. Gigi’s urge to help Brady also parallels Gigi’s own guilt and secrecy about her father, Avery, and Savannah.
Summary
After Knox and Brady stop fighting, Knox realizes Gigi pressed the black emergency button rather than the red hint button. Avery speaks through a hidden speaker to check on them, and Gigi quickly lies that Knox has a bathroom emergency so the game makers will not learn about the fight or the broken rules.
A wall opens to a lit corridor and a bathroom door. Knox angrily accepts the escape, while Gigi thanks the unseen game makers. Once Knox leaves, Gigi asks Brady whether Knox will be okay, and Brady says Knox will be fine until the next time he is not.
Gigi expresses sympathy about Brady’s mother’s cancer, and Brady tells Gigi there is nothing she can do. The comment makes Gigi think about her own burdens: her father’s death, the fact that he died trying to kill Avery, and the secret Gigi keeps from Savannah to protect her twin. Gigi promises that if Gigi wins the Grandest Game, Brady’s mother will be cared for, and even offers to find a way to use Gigi’s trust fund if Gigi loses.
Brady refuses the offer and warns Gigi to be careful with Knox. Brady explains that Knox has improved over the years but remains connected to a dangerous dark place and does not view morality as most people do. To illustrate this, Brady recounts meeting Knox as a child, when nine-year-old Knox violently defended six-year-old Brady from an older bully and then told Brady to go away.
Knox returns from the bathroom soaked from washing his face and hair, and Knox finishes the story. Brady had insisted on becoming Knox’s friend, brought Knox lunches, and eventually Knox began eating dinner every night at Brady’s house. Recognizing how deep the bond between Knox and Brady is, especially because Brady’s mother cooked those dinners, Gigi leaves through the open wall and pretends she needs the bathroom to give the two men privacy.
