CHAPTER 79: LYRA
Overview
Odette withdraws from the Grandest Game and transfers her spot to Brady, upending the remaining player lineup and leaving Knox eliminated. Alone with Lyra and Grayson, Odette reveals that “A Hawthorne” may refer not to Tobias but to Alice Hawthorne, Grayson’s supposedly dead grandmother.
Odette’s confession links Tobias, Alice, Lyra’s father, and an old legal betrayal, suggesting that the mystery behind Lyra’s trauma reaches deeper into the Hawthorne family than Lyra or Grayson imagined. Odette refuses to explain the full truth, gives Lyra the opera glasses, and denies writing the notes with Lyra’s father’s names.
Summary
After Xander gives Lyra her smartwatch, Lyra realizes the field has narrowed from eight players to five and that her alliance with Grayson and Odette has effectively ended. Odette immediately asks whether a watch can be transferred, signaling that she intends to leave the Grandest Game. Lyra and Grayson silently understand that Odette is not leaving because of her illness alone, but because of the secrets surrounding the calla lily, the omega symbol, and Lyra’s father.
Avery, after conferring silently with the other Hawthornes, allows the transfer. Odette first offers the place to Gigi, who fiercely refuses to accept a spot she did not earn. Odette then gives her watch to Brady Daniels, restoring him to the game. Knox, now eliminated while Brady continues, accuses Brady of somehow benefiting from the situation, but Brady says only that he had faith.
Once the others leave the dock, Lyra and Grayson confront Odette. Lyra asks why Odette would abandon her chance to build a legacy for her family, and Odette replies that some legacies should not be passed down. Grayson presses Odette on when she decided to quit, and Odette says it began when the power was cut, or when Lyra saw Odette’s drawing of the calla lily.
Odette finally reveals that Lyra and Grayson have misunderstood Lyra’s father’s final words: “A Hawthorne did this” may not mean Tobias Hawthorne, but a Hawthorne whose first initial is A. Grayson identifies the possibility as Alice Hawthorne, his grandmother, supposedly dead before his birth. Odette adds the cryptic statement that “there are always three,” but refuses to explain what three means.
Odette then explains how she knew Tobias Hawthorne: she worked at McNamara, Ortega, and Jones roughly fifteen years earlier and had a complicated, painful relationship with him. Grayson rejects the idea of a romance because Tobias claimed he loved only Alice, but Odette suggests Tobias saw her as no one and emphasizes that Tobias referred to Alice as gone, not dead. Odette claims Alice returned after her supposed death, asked Tobias for a favor, and Tobias used Odette to accomplish it before discarding her and trying to have her disbarred.
Odette refuses to say what Alice’s favor was or explain more about Alice’s disappearance. She gives Lyra the opera glasses, saying they likely still have a purpose in the game, and insists that her own game is over. When Grayson and Lyra keep pressing, Odette says some riddles are answered only by silence. Lyra finally asks whether Odette wrote the notes containing her father’s names, and Odette calmly says she did not.
