CHAPTER 60: LYRA

Overview

Odette reveals that she was once a Hollywood actress in Changing Crowns, forced to reinvent herself after exploitation, marriage, and an unmarried pregnancy ended her film career. Her personal connection to the movie confirms that the game’s architects engineered this room around her, deepening Lyra’s suspicion that Avery’s picks and Tobias Hawthorne’s old list are not coincidental.

As Lyra struggles with Grayson’s emotional distance, the group solves the hidden film clue: inserted frames spell OPEN THE DRAWERS. The discovery reveals four strange objects and a door labeled FINALE, signaling that they may have reached the endgame.

Summary

Odette deflects Lyra and Grayson’s surprise, then uses the projector to reveal that she appeared in Changing Crowns under the stage name Odette Mora. She explains that Hollywood forced her to change her name, dye her hair red, and accept bad contract terms when she was nineteen. A predatory husband helped her get early roles, then tried and failed to ruin her after she left him.

Odette says she rebuilt her career without him and won prominent parts, including Changing Crowns, but stopped acting after becoming pregnant while unmarried and refusing to “take care of the situation.” Lyra wonders how Odette later became a house cleaner, lawyer, and someone connected to Tobias Hawthorne, but instead notices Odette’s black-dyed hair tips. Odette calls them a reminder of people she has buried, while Grayson pointedly frames that as metaphorical.

Odette reveals that Avery personally picked her to play the Grandest Game. Lyra recognizes that both she and Odette have ties to Tobias Hawthorne and suspects that the game architects deliberately arranged for Odette to reach this room. That suspicion makes Lyra think of Jameson’s reaction on the helipad after Grayson first heard Lyra’s voice.

Lyra abruptly asks Grayson whether Grayson ever told Avery or his brothers about Lyra or their phone calls. Grayson immediately says no, which hurts Lyra and reinforces her decision to focus only on solving the puzzle and leaving by dawn. Grayson restarts the film, arguing that Hawthorne puzzles are meant to be solved and that the clue is likely early in the movie.

As the film plays, Lyra recognizes it as a dated blend of heist film and royal romance and notices that young Odette’s voice is identical to the older woman’s. Grayson quietly comments that Odette is a very good actress, and Lyra wonders whether Odette may have lied about something, though Grayson doubts she lied about Lyra’s father, Tobias, or her health. When the film begins skipping, Lyra and Odette stop it and discover single-frame letters hidden in the reel.

The inserted letters spell OPEN THE DRAWERS. A section of velvet drops from the wall, revealing four drawers and an arched door. The drawers contain a lollipop, sticky notes, a light switch, and a paintbrush, while the bronze doorknob bears one word: FINALE.
