CHAPTER 65: ROHAN
Overview
Rohan and Savannah agree in principle to a dangerous temporary alliance: they will cooperate until the Grandest Game is almost won, then turn on each other. Their FINALE room presents fencing gear, a climbing wall, game-board puzzles, and cryptic props, including a fan marked SURRENDER, underscoring their refusal to yield.
Their tense negotiation is interrupted when the game makers cut the power, shifting the game into a new and more uncertain stage. The blackout raises the stakes and leaves Rohan and Savannah trapped in both competition and reluctant cooperation.
Summary
Rohan presses Savannah to consider a deal after she implies that she wants something beyond the prize money, while Rohan claims he wants only the money. Savannah rejects the idea that Rohan would help her win and trust her to hand over the prize afterward, pointing out that neither of them trusts the other.
Rohan reframes the bargain as a temporary alliance: they will work together through the next phase and eliminate the remaining competition, then freely try to destroy each other once victory is close. Savannah recognizes the arrangement as an alliance built around eventual betrayal, but Rohan insists it is not betrayal if both sides enter knowingly.
Savannah steps through the FINALE threshold, and Rohan follows her into a mirrored hallway that opens into a large room. The space contains fencing mats, two sabers, masks, and jackets, along with a rock-climbing wall. Savannah climbs the wall while still carrying the silk fan, vial of glitter, and lint roller from the previous room, while Rohan keeps the birthday card and longsword.
Rohan examines the fencing gear and notes that the sabers have no writing, unlike the longsword. Savannah observes that Rohan is carefully guarding the longsword, and Rohan counters that Savannah is still wearing the lock and chain because neither of them can be sure their objects have served their only purpose.
The two assess the rest of the room: a whiteboard maze with endpoints marked by a checkerboard, a hangman's noose, and tic-tac-toe; magnetic game pieces; the climbing wall; swords; and their assorted objects. When Rohan opens the birthday card, it plays a familiar instrumental song. Savannah opens the silk fan and reveals the embroidered word SURRENDER, but she answers the command with, "Never."
Rohan uses the possibility of other alliances, especially between Grayson and Lyra, to strengthen his argument that Savannah should work with him. Savannah corrects Rohan's reference to Grayson as her brother by calling him her half brother, but before the conversation can continue, the room and the island lights go out. The heater shuts off, and Rohan concludes that the game makers have cut the power.
