CHAPTER 64: GIGI
Overview
Gigi, Brady, and Knox reach a glass attic finale space, but the objects they find there lead them back to a transformed library full of carved symbols. The puzzle stalls, and the tension between Brady and Knox erupts when Brady rejects Knox’s authority and their brotherly bond.
Knox then gives Gigi a major revelation: Calla Thorp was not taken but ran away after saying goodbye to him. His disclosure, framed partly for whoever may be listening through Gigi’s bug, deepens the mystery around the Thorps and ends with Knox revealing a scar that suggests a darker history.
Summary
Gigi climbs the rope into a glass pyramid-like attic at the top of the house, driven by the need to see what comes next. Knox and Brady follow, and Brady notes that they have at most two and a half hours until dawn, making the end of the game feel imminent.
The attic contains a pane marked FINALE and a loose stained-glass floor panel. Beneath it, Brady finds four objects: rhinestone sunglasses, rainbow unicorn wrapping paper, a ball of multicolored yarn, and nail polish remover that smells like acetone. The team inspects the objects for hidden clues but finds nothing obvious in the paper, sunglasses, yarn, or the bare room.
Gigi realizes that, unlike previous rooms, the trapdoor back to the library remains open, so she jumps down to investigate. Knox and Brady follow. The library has been transformed: the dollhouses, dolls, accessories, and books have vanished, leaving bare shelves carved with dozens of symbols. Gigi explains that rotating double-sided shelves could have swapped the full shelves for empty ones while they were upstairs.
The team spends about an hour trying to decode the carved symbols. As Gigi and Brady talk, Brady begins to describe chaos theory, but Knox snaps at them. Brady responds that Knox has no chain of command over him, saying he is not fifteen anymore and they are not brothers, which exposes a painful fracture between them.
Knox angrily returns to the attic, and Gigi follows him. When she confronts Knox about his attitude and about the deal he made with Orion Thorp the previous year, Knox reveals that Calla Thorp was not abducted, missing, or held captive; Calla ran away and came to Knox the night before to say goodbye. Knox says he has never told Brady because Brady could not understand that goodbye, then pulls down his collar to show Gigi a white, puckered, triangular scar at the base of his neck.
