CHAPTER 4: GIGI

Overview

Gigi Grayson is consumed by solving the public clue for a wild-card ticket to the Grandest Game, even to the point of selling her bed and risking herself on the roof. Grayson offers her an official ticket from Avery, but Gigi rejects it because accepting would feel like pity or guilt rather than proof of her own worth.

The chapter reveals Gigi’s fierce need to protect Savannah and keep an unnamed secret tied to their father, Sheffield Grayson. Her refusal of the easy path turns her Grandest Game quest into a personal test of independence, strength, and legitimacy.

Summary

Gigi Grayson is on the roof seeking a new perspective on a puzzle when Grayson Hawthorne, her half brother, intervenes and gets her safely back into her bedroom. Gigi tries to defuse Grayson’s concern with cheerfulness and by handing him her Bengal cat, Katara, but Grayson immediately notices the room covered in scratch paper and the notes written on Gigi’s arm.

Grayson realizes Gigi has been avoiding his calls because she is trying to solve the public clue for one of the Grandest Game’s four wild-card tickets. Gigi explains that seven players will compete: three chosen by Avery and four found through hidden golden tickets. Grayson tells Gigi that he has no knowledge of the puzzles because Avery and Jameson asked him to help run the game without knowing its secrets, but Gigi still insists she must earn entry on her own.

Grayson then notices more signs that Gigi’s life has become consumed by the hunt, including that her antique bed is gone and her belongings are missing. Pressed to explain, Gigi admits she sold the bedframe for cash and used the money in a “reverse heist,” breaking into a place to leave money behind instead of stealing something. When Grayson asks whether this is about their father, Gigi avoids engaging with the subject and focuses on keeping an unnamed secret connected to Sheffield Grayson.

Grayson produces a black gift box from Avery containing one of the chosen-player tickets. Gigi understands that Avery’s offer is serious and likely connected to guilt over something Gigi refuses to think about. Gigi rejects the ticket, telling Grayson to thank Avery but saying no because Gigi does not want pity, guilt, or anyone doubting her strength.

Grayson warns that if Gigi refuses, his instructions are to give the ticket to Savannah, Gigi’s twin. Gigi immediately objects because Savannah is focused on college, basketball, and her own ambitions, and Savannah does not know the secret. After Grayson’s visit, Gigi recommits herself to three goals: keep the secret, protect Savannah, solve the code, and win a ticket to the Grandest Game on her own terms.
