CHAPTER 45: GIGI
Overview
While alone in the bathroom, Gigi makes progress on her team’s riddle by identifying “mare” as part of the answer. Her breakthrough is immediately overshadowed when a fall breaks her pendant and reveals a hidden listening device inside it.
The discovery shifts the stakes from puzzle-solving to surveillance, suggesting that someone has been monitoring Gigi and possibly exploiting her team’s secrets during the game.
Summary
Gigi retreats to the bathroom and chooses optimism, hoping Knox and Brady will work through their painful history while Gigi solves the riddle alone. Gigi writes the riddle on the mirror with a hidden marker and decides to approach it from the end instead of the beginning.
Gigi reasons that the final line means one answer must satisfy all the clues. Gigi interprets “coolness in shadow” as possibly meaning shade, then studies the clue about “a horse named Lily or Rose,” deciding the spacing may be misleading and that the phrase should be read as one idea.
By focusing on the less obvious meaning of Lily and Rose as girls’ names rather than flowers, Gigi realizes that a horse with either name would be female. That leads Gigi to the term “mare,” making the clue “in front of a mare” feel like a major breakthrough.
Excited by the discovery, Gigi jumps down from the sink but falls. While trying to catch herself, Gigi accidentally breaks the chain of her blue-green pendant and drops the jewel, which separates into clean pieces instead of shattering.
When Gigi examines the pieces, Gigi notices that the gold wiring had been holding the pendant together and that one small piece is not a jewel at all. Gigi recognizes it as an electronic listening device and realizes she has been bugged.
