CHAPTER 47: ROHAN
Overview
Rohan and Savannah solve the “88 locks” riddle as a piano, but their wager turns the solution into a physical and verbal contest over who truly won. Rohan pays his debt by revealing that he works for a secret society built around information, leverage, and control. Savannah then pays hers, admitting that her ruthless drive to win Avery’s game is for her father.
Summary
Rohan focuses on beating Savannah in their wager as they confront the riddle: 88 LOCKS / WAIT, THAT’S NOT RIGHT / AT LEAST THE ANSWER IS BLACK AND WHITE. He reasons that the second line must correct the first, and after rejecting changes to the number, he realizes the incorrect word is “locks.” The answer must be “keys,” and with eighty-eight black-and-white keys, the solution is a piano.
Savannah notices Rohan’s realization and lunges for the rotary phone, determined not to let him beat her again. Rohan trips Savannah, and the two fight viciously, each trying to stop the other from reaching the phone. Savannah then says the answer aloud—“a piano”—and argues that their wager was about solving the riddle, not making the call.
Rohan counters that Savannah saw him solve it first, but Savannah demands proof. Instead of continuing the argument, Rohan gives her the secret he owes: he works for a secret society that serves the powerful and wealthy, and his job involves information, leverage, and control.
Rohan reaches the phone and gives Xander Hawthorne the correct answer. The chamber opens a new passage. Savannah acknowledges that Rohan may have solved the riddle first, and when Rohan presses her to pay her own debt, she reveals that she is competing in Avery’s game and trying to win at all costs for her father.
